From the press conference:
Jerry: Offensive linemen are a great example. There are cap reasons why these OL are projected go early in this draft. They can replace a free agent and what it will cost you to go out and get a veteran at veteran prices. Maybe you forgo the idea of getting big skill guy early and try to get the blockers and plug them in earlier than you used to.

I will believe it when he drafts either Cooper or Warmack.

It sounds like a rationale for not going after high-priced vets, like he's used to doing. I just hope he takes good talent on either line early, where the value is good.

Honestly there are four guys on the roster who take up alot of cap room, are creeping up in age, and normally dont play to their contract. Free, Ausin, Ratliff and Spencer. I have to think to be forward looking they'd love to find their replacements this year. So when I hear guys like Hopkins and Carridine, I think they are very likely if only for cap reasons and not a huge drop off in production.

Yes, one way that you can avoid drafting for need is by drafting for salary cap savings. You can then use the salary cap space to fill needs; although it will normally be the following year.

It might even be possible this year. If the BPA is a WR, then the Cowboys might sign an OL like Clabo or Moore or both after the draft, give them guaranteed money in the 2nd year of their contract, with a low 1st year cap hit. Then next year they could cut Austin, replace him with the draft pick and pay for the Free Agents with the money saved by cutting Austin.
