I can not stand it when they say a player is to small or doesn't have breakaway speed. I buy just about every magazine out there as well as read ton's of info online and some of these guys are idiots.
Please explain to me how a player who runs a 4.43 forty yard dash has excellent break away speed, but a player who ran a 4.49 forty yard dash lacks the break away speed. Your talking about 6 tenths of a second! You have players like Emmitt Smith who ran a 4.71 at the combine who we know wasn't a blazer but he did take some long ones to the house.
Next is the size of a player and their ability to withstand carries at the NFL level. Take someone like Ray Rice for instance, he hasn't proven jack **** yet in the NFL, but I would be he does. He may be 5'8" and weigh 205 lbs, but come on he is built rock solid. If Warrick Dunn can do it at 5'9" and 180 lbs I don't see how they can doubt everyone else that size or an inch bigger. If you look at all these player evaluations you will see that a player who weighs maybe 5-10 pounds more, or is a 1/2" -1" taller is supposed to be a stud. Take a nose tackle for instance, I think we had Ferguson listed at 6'3" tall and 310 lbs but they constantly mentioned that you need a bigger NT and they would suggest someone that was like 6'3" tall and weighs 5 more pounds.
I guess I don't see how you can judge a player based on an inch, or a couple pounds or 5 tenth of a second. I mean half of these players run a certain speed at combine and then run at the pro day and blow away thier previous timed speed. I believe on any given day a player will run a 40 yd dash with up to a full second difference. So to base 2 running attempts at a combine on a players future is silly IMO.
Sorry for the rant, but after buying 4 draft magz and being in the whole about $40, each one is completely different than the other, with complete different outlooks on each player.
