I will not be happy with a Moore hire which means he’s our guy.
I'm not especially convinced that any one of us, me included, are head coaching savants... so I don't get too high nor too low these days, having learned that lesson, about who gets hired anytime one of my teams is getting someone new. I've been not happy too many times when outcomes eventually exceeded expectations... probably with Jimmy Johnson heading that list, because I had no confidence whatsoever that a college coach could make that leap. And for awhile there, of course, that lack of confidence was completely justified. Chuck Fairbanks' failure to make any difference in Boston had seemed compelling. Then, John McKay's teams in expansion Tampa affirmed the suspicion that the NFL was too big for even top NCAA coaches. And Buddy Ryan's open taunts for Jimmy had me at a point of embarrassment, truly, with how inept our head coach seemed to be.
My stoicism is somewhat because I also don't think a head coach can ever be so great at that job that he can succeed without having exceptional talent in the first place. First you have to have the talent inventory, then who is head coach is only slightly more important than if Lady Luck happens to grant you some timely breaks in some important games. Just give me someone I believe to be competent at some good-to-very-good level, and I'm fine.
I see no incredibly obvious best options out there. I refuse to get too upset unless they pull a Chan Gailey... ie, someone very few if anyone had been touting previously as a legit option. And i think Jerry's age automatically eliminates any hire that would try to prove he's smarter than everyone else like the Gailey hire seemed to be about.
