The only movie I ever remember terrifying me as a kid was a TV movie version of "Salem's Lot." What's funny is that my roommate in college had the exact same memory of how scary it was. We rented it and sadly discovered that it's cheesy and boring.

The only other movie that gave me nightmares was "Rollerball" (the original, of course): less "scared" though, more an "intense" thing.

Wizard of Oz. Had bad dreams about witches on brooms for weeks after that.

The Exorcist, Jaws, Amityville Horror, The Omen, The Shining, Halloween, Phantasm, Prophecy (1979).

Sure do miss scary movies that actually scared you. They sure don't make em like they used to.

Totally forgot about Prophecy. Isn't that the one that had some radioactive thing(deformed monster) living in sludge or something? Or was that the Swamp Thing? Can't remember if Adrienne Barbeau was in it or not. Whatever, but Prophecy really scared me as a youngster :) Great call on that one!

There were so many good thriller/scary movies back then such as The Thing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc, etc.

Oh, I can't omit The Birds - classic Hitchcock

I didnt see it until I was older and considering i was an adult I definitely don't blame you

What's funny is I'd seen all the horror up to that point. Poltergeist, Exorcist, Halloween, and damn near all the Friday the 13ths. The difference in almost all of them is that you could see the evil coming. You can't see ish coming when you sleep! No sir! I will not be saying the latest scary movie.

Yep, Creature From The Black Lagoon scared the snot out of me too. And The Birds is still scary today.

Prophecy was the one in the woods, some mutant creature up in the trees. It starred Armand Assante and Talia Shire.

Another few that freaked me out good, although I wasn't exactly a kid anymore, were the original Robocop, The Dead Zone (C. Walken), and Communion (also C. Walken).

You can't do this list without Stephen King's "It"....pretty sure i'm not the only one who had a temporary fear of clowns due to that movie

This comes to mind for me, the Gargoyles from 1972......

Yeah, that one was pretty scary. The Legend of Boggy Creek scared me too. Not a movie but nothing scared me more than that damned wing walker thing on Twilight Zone. I wouldn't get near a window at night for a long time.
