What Position Do You 'Know'

What position when it comes draft time do you always seem to have a good feel for players? Maybe you coached it, played it, or just can tell when someone is going to boom or bust.

My position seems to WR. Granted its a 'sexy' position full of prima donnas - but I can say with confidence that I've got a pretty good eye for talent there.

In 98 at 11 years old I was damn near crying when we passed on Randy Moss. None of us our perfect, for every Sidney Rice there is a Mike Williams, every Desean Jackson has a Limas Sweed - I happened to love all those guys guys coming out of school. I was a big fan of Crabtree, Harvin, and Wallace last year. Hated Bey, Nicks, Britt, and was pretty meh on Maclin.

Liked Desean Jackson in 08 and was screaming to stay away from Charles Rogers. I predicted Miles Austin's emergence last year, and was down on Roy from the word go.

This year I really like Bryant's versatility and ceiling, some guys just go out and make plays. Tate reminds me of Steve Smith for some reason but he'll never be that dynamic, he'll be a reliable #2 guy with a good motor that came out of a pro-style system. I'm meh on the rest - Benn, Williams, Lafell. Surprisingly I like what Shipley can bring to the table in the slot, probably because there is some unconscious conditioning about caucasian receivers in the slot these days because of Welker and Amendola fever). Jacoby Ford is an interesting prospect in the return game (one of our weakest positions last year) because he can fly but he is tiny and wouldn't bring much to our passing game.

So, what position do you seem to know? And who do you see booming or busting this year?

I can't honestly say that I have any special insight into any position or players, but I'm happy to share my views.

High Risk Players
Personally, I would shy away from these players for various reasons. It could be scheme, injury history, their size, (lack of) production, gut feeling, etc. I'm sure several of the players who I would avoid will be controversial, but here it goes.

T Mays, A Davis, Bulaga, Bradford, B Campbell, B Price, Gresham, Dunlap, Griffen, anyone the Raiders draft :)

Guys I Think Will Do Relatively Well
On the flip side, here are some of the guys who I think will do relatively better.

J Jerry, McCourty, Okung, Pouncey, T Alualu, Odrick (as 34 end), J Hughes

Anyway, the lists aren't comprehensive, just some select names.

What do you think of doug free?
I don't doubt that he has the footwork to play LT, he just plays a little too high for my taste and looks like he might struggle with the bull rush. It will certainly help him that he's left-handed. I'm going to take the wait and see approach when it comes to Free.

Going from RT to LT is a lot harder than people think and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he struggles initially. The one good thing that he has going for him is that he has to go up against two of the better pass rushers in the league every day in practice.

Very good insight. Had no idea he was left handed, thats a huge plus. I like what he brings when he gets to the next level, I think he's really going to help our run game.

The one thing he has going for him is we have two very capable blocking TEs and we throw a lot of formations at teams, so if he happens to be facing a premier pass rusher we can give him some help without sacrificing very much.

OK, you will be my go-to guy on draft day. Give it your best!

And what the hey does your quote above means? I mean, i cannot fathom how race could play into this. Haven't you heard it is 2010?

Oh, and put me down for HC as my position. I have never HC'd but I did stay at Holiday Inn Express.

Quarterback. I'm really good at breaking down mechanics. I used to coach that. When I watch QBs I see footwork, ball position, hips, head and shoulder position, and follow through as one movement.

Quarterback and WR.

Stafford the best longterm QB, Freeman the 2nd best. Wont be able to say if that holds true for a couple of years, but I think its clear Stafford is the #1 QB considering he doesnt have the best O-line, defense and running game like Sanchez yet he still outproduced him in 10 games vs 16 games.

This years QB crop;
Matt Nichols best longterm QB if he gets a team to give him the Romo treatment.
Comparision: Tony Romo

Bradford he will be average and then the team will have to decide if they want to accept mediocracy at the QB position, ala a Eli Manning career, he will be a average starter, but not great by any stretch of an imaganation
Comparision: Eli Manning

Clausen Im really undecided on, he has the tools to be a good NFL QB, but if he will work hard enough is another question.
Comparision: Aaron Rodgers. (reasoning for doubters: Comparable skill set IMO.)

Tim Tebow I wont bet against him, but I have doubts he will have the tools to be a longterm solution at QB.
Comparision: Leadership abilitys: Ray Lewis. Abilitys on the field: Bryon Leftwich.

WR:
Dez Bryant
Am I really the only one who does not think lieing to NCAA Officials is a problem? He will be a player, but not the elite #1 WR everyone is playing him out to be. He will be a lower end #1 or elite #2(Anquan Boldin)
Comparision: Randy Moss/Terrell Owens LITE.

DeMaryious Thomas
A physical WR, but below-average speed and terrible route running puts him on my bust watch.
Comparision: Michael Clayton (run blocking ability. Heck you could put RW11 here, but wasnt he fast coming out of college?)

Golden Tate
He will either be the best WR in this class or a bust. Book it.
Player comparision: Steve Smith NYFG.

Arrelious Benn
Wont bust, but wont be a #1 WR. IMO he is the safeist WR that is projected in the top 3 rounds.
Comparision: Anquan Boldin.
