What positions are deep in talent, day one?

Sorry to be lazy and not parse all the threads here ..

But for a casual draft fan like me nowadays, what positions this year are deep in talent so that an exceptional player may drop to 51? ... And which positions are so weak that you would have to trade up for need?

I'm an older guy and I remember driving to the newsstand the Thursday before the draft to get PFW/Joel Buschbaum's final draft grades ...

It seems like it depends on the top 15-20 picks. Some years there are 6 studs, other years 15 studs. The whole first day is dependent on these "sure things" and whether you have to trade up to get the guy you want or whether he will drop to you .. and the other guys that are pushed down by an awesome crop and you may get a player at 51 that's great, because there were so many superb players at the very top of the draft .. makes a huge difference in draft strategy (it seems)

In 1990, six LBs were taken ahead of Emmitt Smith .. this is the thing I'm thinking about .. which positions are too expensive, and where can you find some bargains?

Thanks in advance for replies ...

Unfortunately RB is very Deep. We are pretty stacked at TB so that won't help us much. LB seems to be rather deep spot. We could use ILB early also another OLB to paly behind Ware and Spencer seems to be a top priority. S is area of great need, I wouldn't call this a deep crop of Saftey's. But there are a ton of guys who are college CB's that will probably play S in the NFL Sean Smith Utah, Macho Harris VT are just 2 of them will probably make the change.

WR is definately deep as well.

DT/NT is very lean this year especialy 2 gapp type NT's

It is generally thought that, in this year's draft, the following positions are deep:

OT
WR
C
RB

It also SEEMS that there are a bunch of 3-4 OLB prospects as well, but those are harder to quantify. The DE position certainly seems well stocked.

WR. Don't be shocked if we go WR at or before 51. Some talent is going to fall to the 2nd round and we've got enough ammunition to make a move to slide up and grab a guy like Harvin if he takes a DeSean Jacksonesque slide.

Day 1:

Top 60 prospects.
i am using a cbs sports ranking but most are very similar at top 60 level.

QB: 3
RB: 5
WR: 8 ***
OL: 8
LB: 7
DL: 14 (4 or 5 of these guys can play 3-4 OLB) *****
CB: 7
S: 4

So looking at that I'd say QB gets shallow quick on day 1 as will Safeties.

The thing with safeties is they get rather deep between 60-90 so it may be a good idea to grab one at 92 where value should be great provided you feel you aren't passing up a starter earlier.

Round 2 present a chance to grab a DL. 14 of those guys are rated above 60 and while teams really like DL its quite possible at 51 the highest guy on the board will be a DL. The question is will that DL be a guy who fits well into this scheme.

CB has 7 bodies in the top 60 but I am fairly certain the top 2 guys just can't play. I'd avoid CB like the plague day 1. I saw Vontae Davis and Malcolm Jenkins run DB drills and they looked like safeties. They may be great cover 2 CBs as will Sean Smith but for a team like Dallas they will struggle.

WR offers a fair amount of bodies and completely different types of WRs. The only thing close to a complete package is Crabtree and he is injured. They all have question marks. You guess right you get a real valuable piece, you guess wrong you get another in a long line of WR duds.

I'd be shocked.

Jerry has told us many times he feels RW is his number 1 this year.

So I don't see us going WR before round 3 at the earliest.
Now I admit if someone we felt was a r1 WR talent fell he'd have to think about it but again I just don't see that happening.

I didn'y know Harris was being considered as a safety in the NFL. He would be a good one if he is. You just gotta love a guy with the nickname "Macho Man."

I'd say OLB and WR are the best. Safety is a bit thin and 3-4 DT is awful. I really think we need to go safety early, cuz I don't see much later.
