I was curious to know, since our last Super Bowl season in 1995, what positions this organization has valued most in the first round of the draft?

Round one is where the most “can’t miss” talent lies, so what do our first round pick patterns over the years reveal? (Side note: Because of trades, the Cowboys did not have a first round pick in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2009, and 2019)

FIRST ROUND PICKS BY POSITION SINCE 1995
  • DE - 5 (G. Ellis, E. Ekuban, D.Ware, A.Spencer, T.Charleton)
  • LB - 3 (B. Carpenter, LVE, M.Parsons)
  • CB - 3 (T. Newman, M. Claiborne, B.Jones)
  • T - 3 (Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith [drafted as a T], Tyler Guyton)
  • G - 2 (Martin, Booker)
  • RB - 2 (Felix Jones, Zeke)
  • WR - 2 (Dez, Cedee, technically could be 3 if we counted the Cooper trade for a #1 in ‘19)
  • TE - 1 (D.LaFleur)
  • C - 1 (T. Frederick)
  • S - 1 (R. Williams)
  • DT- 1 (M. Smith)
  • QB - 0
Most of these players were good picks. Just interesting to see what positions have had the most high draft investment. Interesting. It would seem our GM really values his DE “War Daddy” types in round one. DT, S and QB not so much.

Don't start me again regarding DTs.

I didn’t realize Kavika Pittman wasn’t a first round pick. Jerry traded down with Washington to get an extra third rounder…which they used on Clay Shiver, who is right there with Phil Costa for worst center in team history.

Do you realize over 30 years we could have had at least 2, maybe 3 more blue chip all pro quarterbacks, if we just bit the bullet and picked one.
Gee, thanks, Jerry.

The GM is the least respected position and Jerry has earned it. As for players, I think the Cowboys have a long history of undervaluing the DT position. In the good times we were set at that position but in other years(which is most of the time) not so much.

The lack of first round QBs has been about them figuring they already had their guy….going back almost 20 years now, and the first round pick was usually the big move in trying to build around Romo and Prescott.

It is indeed interesting that when you think about late Jan/early Feb football, it’s often about QB and DT play, while Jerry still likes to collect corners and receivers.

If you’re wanting Jerry to have pulled something like the Rams did with Goff/Stafford…..lol. Jerry isn’t that GM. He isn’t good at this, he just wants the credit if it happens to go well. Jerry would have given Goff a statue for getting them into a SB and putting up three points.

It’s interesting that the very first draft pick in Cowboys history was a DT - Bob Lily.

So Landry-Schramm era first pick was a DT. The Jimmy-Jerry era started with their first pick - a QB. Since Jimmy left we’ve never drafted a QB in round one and drafted one DT in round one. Very interesting and telling.

wow, no QB since AIkman (I guess walsh counts too). DT is way under drafted. too may guards. I would consider Tyler Smith Guard since he was not going to play tackle when he was drafted.

seemingly we do good with WR and OL and pretty much suck in other positions in the first round.

4 if you also count the RW trade.

30 years. W/ a slight blip when Tuna was here.

Yeah Mazi was closer to 2nd or 3rd rd talent. Every year there are only about 15-20 players who have true “first round talent”.
What's crazy is that they waited damn near 25 years to invest another 1st in position......and drafted Mazi (lol). Think of all the ones we passed over during that time frame.
