What Randy Gregory could be

It was four years ago, early in 2011, and a general manager was on the phone, ranting. He interrupted himself to pose a question:How could Justin Houston be so damn stupid?

Then, the rant continued. Houston would never make it as a pro. He doesn't have the head for it. Or the work ethic. He is destined to be a failure. Why? The reason, this general manager explained, was because Houston had failed a combine drug test, for marijuana...

I think our drafting of Gregory and our signing of Collins has gone entirely too unheralded in the media.

Gregory was a player who was being compared to Jadeveon Clowney. And at least at one point was considered a top 5 pick. You bring him to a situation which should be pretty good for him with Marinelli. I'd be stunned if Marinelli doesn't turn him into a top 10 or 15 pass rusher.

The interesting thing going forward is will the Cowboys sign Hardy to a long term deal before the season is over with.

Hardy, McClain, and Crawford are important elements of this defense going forward, and all of them could be gone next year; McClain and Hardy especially.

I think McClain has put himself into a position where no team is going to give him a long term contract, maybe not even the Cowboys.

I think he ends up on another one year deal next year. So going forward, he will only really have one more shot at a long term deal. You just can't trust the guy at the moment.

I think best case scenario for him, someone gives him like a 1 year 7 million dollar deal if he has an amazing season even after missing the first 4 games. Or maybe the Cowboys give him a long term deal that he has to earn as he goes. That could be likely too.

As for Hardy, if both Gregory and Lawrence deliver, it will be difficult to pay both Hardy and Crawford, but I think ideally you want 3 dominant defense ends. That helps transform your defense.

All true but remember Marinelli values the 3T more then any position. If Crawford and Hardy both have great seasons and we can only keep one it'll be Crawford

I don't think he values the 3 technique more than an edge rusher. I think the difference here is we have a lot more options off the edge.

If guys like Gregory and Collins use what happened to them as motivation, put in the work, and go out everyday to prove the rest of the league was wrong
Then they have the potential to be very good football players. A big part of the game is motivation
Just look at contract years for many players when they have career years
The mind is a powerful thing if used right

Well that would be another reason they would keep Crawford over Hardy. There's no one after Crawford. Behind Hardy they're banking on Gregory. Hopefully we can keep both

The Dallas Cowboys got some disrespected defense coming up. This not your daddy's team.

Try and get some. Good luck with that...just don't get hurt. This team is representing the STAR.

The offense is going to do what they can.

Rookies have a ton of potential.....but we need to wait and see what they do on the field....Gotta gut feeling Gregory will surprise us, while Collins is all glamor and media hype...a great story.....but in the end just another average at NFL player at best..... Trust in Leary

I couldn't be happier with this defense. The only thing that brings everything down is McClain's suspension.

After week 4, I'm expecting a top 5 defense on the field. they just need to stay healthy.

I hoped the Cowboys retained Durant and Carter, but we lost both, and at the end of the day I still think we upgraded at linebacker over what we had after the previous season.

Whether Crawford is more important than Hardy depends on a lot of things, including the development of numerous players over the course of this year.

Cowboys D could be 2 above average players away from being as dominant as the Cowboys O. Hopefully we find or develop those players before the regular season.

While it's not hard to justify the disrespect by simply saying they haven't proven any differently on the field yet, I completely agree with your statement. While it may not be "shock the world" type of stuff the defense will be much better than most expect.

They keep talking about a DL on rush downs of Gregory-Hardy-Crawford-Lawrence. That was probably something Marinelli thought of 30 seconds after Gregory was drafted, it really could be a dominant group.

Has there ever been a DL with four players with ten sacks or more? I don't think the JPP/Osi Giants ever did that, has a recent team hit that number?

You know, I've been wondering the same myself. I don't know if there have been three defensive lineman with 10 plus sacks. Where are the resident statisticians when you need them?
