What should Jerry do with Garrett?

I know we all hate addressing this topic, but after hearing so much speculation about JG in college/pro head coaching vacancies in the next few years, I'm now pretty much dead certain that Garrett is going to be a head coach somewhere by 2009, possibly earlier.

So that begs the question... what does Jerry do? I know you can attribute a lot of our success to JG's offense, but Wade had something to do with our record too, and it's bad policy to turn around and fire the guy a year or two after you hire him just so you can keep Garrett. Kind of like stabbing the guy in the back.

The other question I'd have is if JG is willing to wait around until Wade is no longer interested/gets fired. Because unless he retires, I don't see Wade leaving any time soon, certainly not before Garrett is offered. I'm hoping there's some kind of arrangement in the offing, because I don't want to feel like we let the next great Cowboys HC get away when we knew what we had all along.

So does Jerry just throw an obscene amount of money at him, do we just have to deal with seeing him leave us for greener ($$) pastures or does Jerry steal JG's car keys?

Head Coach money and a fancy title like Co-Head Coach/Offense. Of course and under the table agreement that he gets the job when Wade is done.

Jerry can offer more money to stay on as an OC and possibly add in contract that he'll be the next Cowboys' HC. However, if JG has a desire to be a HC next season, there isn't much Jerry can do.

Nothing. Let him stay, let him go, who cares?

Hope that teams fawn over the adorable Josh McDaniels instead.

Potential jobs next year:

Dolphins
SF
Washington? (G. Williams should be next)
Ravens?
San Diego?
NYG (if they fold these last 4 games)

Besides NYG, I can't see him leaving for any of the other teams.

Frankly I just don't see Garrett leaving for any college head coaching job -- unless that has been his secretly wish all along.

Frankly, I also doubt he would leave for a head coaching job after this season. I expect him to hang around at least 1 more year. Too many of us assuming it would be so easy to do that job. This is Garrett's first year as an OC and he's also only got 2 years of coaching at all. If he becomes a head coach, he would be responsible for filling all those jobs including picking his DC and what kind of scheme they should run. Also what kind of power would he have within the new organization when he comes to FA signings, drafts, etc.

I know Aikman said Garrett would be a head coach next year but unless Garrett specifically told him that then I don't believe it will happen. I do believe Garrett is a very smart man, smart enough to know there's a lot more to becoming a successful head coach then what he's done so far in his career.

I think he sits down with Jerry after the season is over and after a discussion Jerry pays him some more big money and no doubt tells him he's the future head coach of the Cowboys but not until Wade leaves. BTW: I also believe Garrett will be very selective as to which offer he eventually takes if he chooses not to stay around after 08 season. If I'm Garrett, I'm not going to any team which I don't believe has a history of committment to fielding winning teams. I'd also turn down a team that didn't have at least a few good players & a QB he could work with or get one in the draft.

Do admit I'm a homer: I also want Garrett around to ensure Romo continues make dramatic strides in his development as a great, elite NFL QB. I like to hear what Campbell said about Romo but I've also heard same thing from other QB experts re how greatly Romo has progressed this year; i.e. Young, Jaworski, Montana, etc.

Stop worrying. This is the dumbest thing to worry about. He isn't going any where. No one is going to hand over a multi billion dollar business to someone who has only been an OC for one year. That would be like someone getting a job stocking shelves at Wal-Mart so well that after a year they make them VP. He won't go no where for at least 2 more years, AT LEAST.

Remember the personal services contract? Trump signed Herschel Walker to one for the USFL. What are the rules for coaching contracts, I know there is no salary cap.

Dolphins won't bail that fast.

San Fran has already said Nolan is coming back.

San Diego won't bail that fast.

Washington will go after Cowher.

Coughlin isn't going anywhere.

The Ravens don't seem to be a fit.

I'm with you Hostile: Skins are going to hire Cowher. All his critics on this board can say whatever they want, but the guy would turn them around in 2 seasons: tops. God I don't want to play the obnoxious "jaw" 2x per year.....

I think those jobs are safe.
I dont see any as a lock for a vacancy.

Zoners need to stop worrying about JG.

He will be on our team for many years to come.

People think that his only chance to be a HC will be this upcoming season?

He will have opportunities for years... just based on his small sample size as OC

Already rumors flying about Cam and the Phins..never know

I must have missed that on Nolan..my bad

If SD misses the playoffs...he's gone

Agree w/ Washington, but isn't Williams next in line..via contract?

Only if NYG miss playoffs

Agree on Ravens

I pretty sure Garrett was hired w/ a wink and reference to being the next HC, Phillips is only signed for 2 more years, I like to think that Garrett would like to take these 3 years and learn how to run a team, IMO he'd be better prepared in the long-run running this O for 3 years, and then becoming HC

Yup.

He isn't going anywhere.

If I ever made a guarantee this might just be it.
