What should they do at number 2 receiver?

1) They are not going to spend $12 to $15 million on a free agent.

2) Why would Denver give up Sutton just to trade up eight spots.

3) Draft is most likely since they signed Campbell in free agency.

4) They could trade a late-round pick for a vet or pick up another cheap vet in FA, but I think Lockett could be out of their price range as well. I think if they look for another, it will be someone in the $3 million to $5 million range. Lockett's market value is almost $8 million.
Denver would like to get a top rookie receiver on a rookie contract to develop with Nix and not have to pay Sutton.

A big decision is coming at number 2 receiver. As of today it looks like they have several options.

1. Sign Keenan Allen. This would cost them some money. Maybe 12 to 15 million a year on a 2 year deal.

2. Trade for Courtland Sutton. Maybe they could trade pick 12 for Sutton and pick 20. They then would have Sutton and could draft their running back and the do have the cap space to sign Sutton to a multi year deal.

3. Draft Tet McMillan, or Emeka Egbuka, or Golden. This puts the 2 spot on the shoulders of a rookie.

4. Sign Tyler Lockett and still draft a rookie.
Question: Why would Tyler Lockett any different than the departed Brandin Cooks ?

If Keenan Allen costs money ,.. I'm out on signing him. And i'm wanting much more splash and dynamics from my No.2 guy.

If we were rashed with WR injuries, maybe so on Allen ...but just for sake of a slow, old possession guy ... i'd rather keep seeking options elsewhere.

4.... all day vet +draft

I would prefer that it was addressed in FA or a trade. Drafting a guy to depend on his immediate impact as a #2 WR is not reliable.

And it probably means you would have to use as a higher draft pick on a position where finding a good player doesn’t require a first or second rounder.

And on top of that, this WR draft is not that deep. Again, I would feel better about getting a decent FA that is plug and play in either FA or a trade than draft a WR high. Especially when we have so many other roster holes.

It was hard for me to come to this decision but we should draft a receiver at 12. It appears we will get the first shot so if Tet or Golden are legit, the Cowboys should take one of them. The receivers in free agency want money so I would leave them alone.

If Dart or Sanders is there at 12 they may be able to trade back add another top 100 pick and draft a WR. I wouldn't rule out Luther Burden III.

If the Cowboys don't take Golden with their #1 (either at #12 or trading down into the 20s for some extra pick(s)), they definitely should target Tennessee WR, Dont'e Thornton Jr (6'4.5", 206 lbs, 4.30 40 time), either late 2nd (if the Cowboys trade down in the 1st round and pick up an extra 2nd round pick) or in the 3rd round.

Dont'e Thornton Jr reminds me of Alvin Harper (6'3.5", 205 lbs, 4.40 40 time). Similar size and speed (Thornton is faster), plus similar college production (both went to Tennessee). Alvin Harper definitely became the Robin for Michael Irvin as Batman and helped open things up underneath for Irvin as Harper became a constant deep threat weapon starting in 1991.

In 1992, Harper established himself as one of the best deep threats in the NFL with a 21.6 yards per catch. In 1994, he bettered that with a 24.9 yards per catch and 8 TDs, a record average that still holds today in 2025. Harper's four-year stint with the Cowboys is not particularly impressive from a statistical view. He never topped 50 catches, 850 yards or eight TDs in a season, but he most definitely was the key player who helped open things up underneath for Michael Irvin. Remember, the Cowboys had previously drafted the much faster (4.26 40 time) but smaller (5'11", 184 lbs) Alexander Wright in 1990, but he simply was unable to open things up underneath for Irvin the way Harper did.

This is why I hesitate to draft Matthew Golden in the first because even though he is blazing fast (4.28 40 time), he is also short (5'11") for a #2 WR just like Alexander Wright was.

I truly believe it would be smarter and better to draft Dont'e Thornton Jr (6'4.5", 206 lbs, 4.30 40 time) because he could use his speed, height and leaping ability like Alvin Harper did to constantly attract doubles teams deep down the field, thus better able to open things up underneath for CeeDee Lamb the way Alvin Harper did for Michael Irvin.

How good was Alvin Harper? A career breakdown...

Tolbert. He had a pretty good season with Rush as QB.
Turpin and Ceedee got contracts.

Let's see what we've got with Dak back, besides too much money already at QB and WR.

Draft a developmental guy who might be able to be #2 in a couple of years.
Get some cheap vet cap casualty.

Done.

We need to pick up a veteran and draft a WR that can hopefully develop into a solid number 2.

exactly. don't reach....but if a trade down makes sense, to pick up additional 2nd or 3rd rounder, then we should do it.
If mason or McMillan is there I have to take them. If not you look at your board and hope it’s right. Then you can move down a few spots and still get a burden then that’s great. But you can’t move far and for someone to want to move up means someone fell and someone wants them bad. I don’t see a QB falling that’s worth trading up for. I don’t see who could fall that would be worth trading up for that we wouldn’t want but you never know

This team admitted they may have made a mistake in trusting rookie OL last season.

Only to rely on rookie players again to come in and start.

It’s nonsensical what they have done this offseason starting with the joke of a coaching search.

I would say delay drafting a guy but the wr class is so good I think we better draft one. Then let the new guy compete in camp with Mingo, and the others. Mingo is much better than we think. He's never had a real NFL QB to play with.
