What should they do at number 2 receiver?

Give Mingo a chance at WR2. He was a 2nd round pick for a scrub team.

Just because he was a second round pick, doesn’t mean he’s a good player.

Lance was a 3rd overall pick.
Leaf was a top 2 pick.
Russell. Etc.

You guys need to let go of where a guy was drafted. It means absolutely nothing except a team either overvalued him or undervalued him.

Where someone is drafted means nothing to how they play in the NFL.

A big decision is coming at number 2 receiver. As of today it looks like they have several options.

1. Sign Keenan Allen. This would cost them some money. Maybe 12 to 15 million a year on a 2 year deal.

2. Trade for Courtland Sutton. Maybe they could trade pick 12 for Sutton and pick 20. They then would have Sutton and could draft their running back and the do have the cap space to sign Sutton to a multi year deal.

3. Draft Tet McMillan, or Emeka Egbuka, or Golden. This puts the 2 spot on the shoulders of a rookie.

4. Sign Tyler Lockett and still draft a rookie.

Allen comes with his own hyperbolic chamber at this stage of his career.

Sutton is a just above average receiver in the last year of his contract whose eyes must be bugging at the contract the comparable receiver Higgins got!

12 is way too high for a #2 WR. The only 2 I see capable of playing outside are Tet and Ebuka. Too much risk with Tet at 12 for my taste and Ebuka is clearly in the 20s range. Golden is probably going to be limited to slot at this level and this team likes to play CD out that position!

Lockett is done, has been!

I don’t see the logic in trying to force a WR in the first, in a weak draft, when all of the candidates have questions and we have this many holes. The only receiver I’d really want is Jake Bech 3rd because he’s flexible enough to play both outside and slot and he’ll block in the running game!
Also don’t see the logic in multi year contracts on someone whose ceiling is 700 yards.
I’d just assume continue developing Tolbert, Mingo, Flournoy and Brooks for this season which is mostly a rebuild year and see what shakes out. Then take a shot next season when the class isn’t this weak!

I say draft one. A quality option should be there at 12 overall if there is not a corner or RB worthy of that spot. The Cowboys still have Tolbert, Mingo, and others to take some #2 receiver snaps to relieve some of the burden on a rookie.

I don't think 12 is too high for a number two receiver. That is a starter and potentially the second option behind Lamb in the passing game.

Dallas took Lamb in 2020 at 17 overall with both Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup coming off 1000 yard seasons. That worked out.

Well there’s a clear difference in these scenarios.
First Lamb fell. He was by far the best available player at the pick and had the potential to be a clear cut #1. None of the players fit either. I don’t think they’ll be the undeniable best player available nor do I see their ceiling be much more than a #2.
Also Cooper’s contract was designed from the beginning so that they could easily walk away from it after 2 seasons… which they did.
There was a fairytale scenario in Jerry’s head that Lamb might fall and he jumped when it materialized.
So yeah, dropping the 12th on a #2 receiver whose ceiling is probably a #2, in a run based offense where they’d be lucky to get 50 receptions a season is too high.
That’s even more magnified and looks like we can afford luxuries when the overall roster looks like Swiss cheese!

They struggle coming up with one because they put very limited resources into it. Compare what the Eagles have done with the Cowboys. Then look at what happened in the super bowl. They dominated and won a championship while we ate popcorn and watched.

We invested a first round pick on DT two years and he hasn’t panned out. We’ve been forced to reach to try and find a dominant player at the position. Philly got lucky having a top 5 pick enabling them to land a great DT. The Cowboys haven’t been in position to land a great DT.
