Blow up the Big XII, and bring back an all-new Southwest Conference... include the major Texas and Oklahoma teams, maybe Arkansas...
I know I'm dreaming, but I could doodle up some terrific, regional conferences if they gave me half a chance... you could come up with a second conference of Texas and New Mexico teams, with teams like UTEP, New Mexico and New Mexico State...
Just think of what the teams would save on travel costs each year...
All these super football conferences are making it harder on the lesser sports. now the travel for those sports has to escalate so much more because of it. Yes, football is the breadwinner, I get that. However, what good is it to make a few extra million if you have to waste it on travel for all the other sports teams for your school?
Give me 128 D-1 schools. Give me 8 conferences, with 16 teams in each conference (2 divisions in each conference). Divide each conference geographically. Each team play 11 conference games. The winners of each division play for the Championship. Each conference champion then moves on to an 8 team playoff.
In this scenario, all the California schools are in the same conference, along with some other schools. All the Texas schools are in the same conference along with the Oklahoma schools, and maybe a few more. All the Florida schools are in the same conference. All the Louisiana schools are in the same conference.
BTW, you can still have your plethora of bowls. But the 7 playoff bowl sites are as follows: Alamo (San Antonio), Fiesta (AZ), Cotton (Arlington), Sugar (NO), Orange (Miami), Rose (SoCal), and Peach (Atl).
The playoffs begin the week after the Championships. Round 1, 4 games. The next weekend, Round 2, 2 games. Then you take 2 weeks off before the National Championship, like the NFL does with the SB. During those two weeks, we get bombarded by all the lesser bowls (about 28 games).
