The Cowboys really need to add a couple of elite players more than they need to add several just above average players.
We saw this season what an elite player like Zeke can do for the offense.
The Cowboys have a lot of players that are decent NFL players but many are right at average.
Add an elite DE and the Cowboys best DE then becomes the #2 DE.
Add an elite CB and the Cowboys best CB become the #2 CB.
Add an elite LB and it helps both the DL and the Secondary.
Add a Strong Safety with range and it helps the surrounding players and opens up the scheme when they don't have to worry about protecting a player with limited range.
Example: DLaw was in theory the top pass rushing DE and therefore when healthy started at RDE. If an elite RDE is added and DLaw moves to LDE or 2nd string RDE, then he would be fine (if healthy).
Add 2 elite players on defense and any of the other positions will be fine if manned by the same 2016 starters. Yes, it would be ideal if 1 of the elite players was a great pass rushing DE, but even if not, then an elite DT would make the current DEs better and./or elite coverage players would force QBs to hold the ball longer and enable the DL to get more sacks. Finding a ball hawk type DB would help everybody.
On offense, adding an elite WR would open up things to the other WRs, TEs and running game.
Summary: They don't have to just fill holes. They can focus on getting a couple of elite players between the draft and free agency.
Maybe Jaylon Smith can be one of the elite players, but I'm not counting on that until I see him playing football.
The biggest exception is RT where even a barely average player would be a huge improvement.
