Let's say we re-sign Mclain, Carter, Melton (restructure), Free (restructure), Dez, and Murray (or pick up AP instead)….
what do we need?
Defense obviously, but definitely not at LB. DL maybe but the youngsters have been doing pretty well, Crawford found his spot, and Lawrence may be really good. Secondary, I actually like Moore, Scan, Patmon, and Carr pretty well. Can't say Church or Wilcox have been bad either.
Maybe a passrusher, DT, 1x OL, DB, and backup QB or RB if one we like really drops.
If the D keeps ballin and everyone gets healthy, seems like our needs get pretty light.

You do what we have been doing, stick to your board, look to add picks if the right guy is not there.

I think Parnell needs to show something the next few weeks or OT becomes a possibility early. We could use a play maker on any of the 3 levels on defense. I don't think you can have too many impact players in your front 7.

Preferable a strong side DE, but.....

-We could use an elite talent at CB

-A RT to take over for Free

- A talented QB to groom for the future

- A HB if Murray walks. Yes we can get one later and yes anyone could be solid behind our OL but on a run driven team, Im not turning my nose up to a Todd Gurley or a Melvin Gordon if they are there in the first.

- A versatile LB if Carter walks. One who can play SAM and Will. Hitchens already fits this bill, but IMO he has too much value as a reserve. And I think best position is MIKE anyways.

-A Safety. I dont think its a huge need with Wilcox coming on and Churchs contract very friendly. But we need someone to replace Church when his contract is up

We have Spencer, Selvie, Gardner, Boatright and Sam right now...SDE is not as important as a rush end.

Lawrence was drafted to be the rush end. Selvie and Spencer are free agents after the season and the other guys are jags. Mincey is a very good player but id like him in a rotation moving down the line. We need a player we could develope into a dominant start like an Oakman or a Flowers

You can never have enough OL and DL.

Depending on Carr, DB may be a need. But, you stack the DL, and you can afford to go late for a CB.

Dallas was at its best in the 90's when we had a rotation of Haley and Jeffcoat at RDE.

Garrett is using those teams as a model.

Its gonna a tough spot where we are drafting most likley. Im seeing us no earlier then 25th, and we will need to hit a rough spot this season to get that.

Typically your elite prospects at QB, OT and DE will be long gone. The guys left at those positions usually have alot of question marks. Usually at that part of the draft Safeties and interior OL become value. Even HB in what looks like a solid.

An early week 7 guess. We go by our board and take a Safety or Melvin Gordon

As for a QB, I think the FO may go for a really proven back up QB. Don't ask me who, cause I have no idea.

This team is all of a sudden close. A good backup could save the season next year if needed.

Exactly. And I think Sam will wind up being Jeffcoat. You give 300 snaps on the weakside he gives you 5 to 6 sacks a year. Gardener is interesting, but I think he is an inside/outside guy. If the chips fall our way(read my last post, im not expecting that at all) Id love to get a high upside strong side defender to mold and initially split reps with Mincey.

We still need play makers in the secondary and DL. Yes we have good solid players but no great players. I would live a play making free safety and DE. Also still need depth along the DL.

I'm always for adding another OL.

Also we have alot of pend g free agents with limited cap room. We need to go to Romo, Witten, Carr, Melton, and maybe free and gave them renegotiate their salaries to open cap space.

Right now we have 3 LBs that are pending free agents. McClain, Durant, and Carter.

The Sterling Moore is also a pending free agent.

Harris is too.

Then of course Dez and Murray.

At that spot you're hoping there's someone left on your board with a first round grade. Historically, the positions that seem most likely to slide are RB or LB.

many of the players on the rooster were considered second tier [even jags] players until Marinelli coached em up.
Up grading any position is fine.
