What To Do With A Week In Houston?

I'm landing Sunday afternoon.

I was originally promised a trip to Dallas for a playoff game that would have been next week (plans were made over the summer. I agreed to the trip on that condition because I didn't want to miss the game. I wouldn't have missed the game for anything but used it as some leverage.) but since that isn't in the cards, what do you locals consider a good time.

Not looking into the bar scene as it really doesn't interest me much and one bar is as good as the next anywhere ya go. At least for me.

Help me out folks.

I spent some time down there working back in late 2005. I came away most impressed with a place called Burns BBQ. It's a tiny place and it's always crowded, but man, the ribs and the brisket there make it worth the wait.

It's in a tiny shack in a somewhat run-down area, but don't let that scare you away. It's worth the trip over there. It's also somewhat difficult the find the first time so if you do go over there, make sure you have a map. :)

I have been to Houston many times but unfortunately it was on business each time. I don't know if they have tours but NASA's head quarters is in Houston.

Depends on what you want to do....

Galleria mall and overall area is always recommended for shopping and restaurants.

I'd say Kemah boardwalk - not sure how much damage there might be due to Ike. Haven't been there since then. Same with Galveston. No idea on what it looks like since Ike.

Downtown has a bunch of night spots now.

If you're bringing kids, Discovery Green is great for the kiddos. It's our new urban park. They have stuff going on everyday. They actually have an ice skating rink. Funniest part is that it's currently 75 degrees. discoverygreen.com

You can always catch a Rockets game if you just want to watch a b-ball game live.

There are ton of gentlemen's clubs, if that's something you're into. I don't know a thing about them, but there everywhere you turn.

Theatre district downtown has shows all the time. They have a website.

Richmond strip has a bunch of eateries and watering holes.

For kicks, you can always take the train just to get a quick tour through the center of Houston for a $1.

There are tours, but I have no idea where they go. I guess a google search would help.

My friends love the Houston zoo.

Miller Outdoor theatre usually has something going on. They have a website if you want to check things out.

I think NASA does have tours. Check out space center houston. I think it's really for kids, but my old job had a company party there and it was pretty cool.

Right by the Zoo & Miller's Outdoor theater is the Medical Center all walking distance is also the IMAX and the Museum District so there are a lot of Museums.

If you have access to a car and like History about an Hour north on I45 is Huntsville Texas and you can see the Giant Sam Houston statute; a Museum; the prison Museum (If you did not know Huntsville Texas is Home to Sam Houston State and the major headquarters for the Texas prison system)

If you go out the 290 route on the way to Brenham, Texas the Home of Blue Bell Ice cream (Tours only during the weekdays) but on the way is Washington on the Brazos the Birth Place of Texas it is about a 30-35 minute drive depending on where your staying.

Just a few places also they have Bear Creek park with some animals and a park of course.

Lots of Golf Course more than you can shake a stick at

You have Horse Racing at Sam Houston Race Park

More Family type stuff

Old McDonalds Farm

Zube Park has a live steam engine ride (it says Hockley which is right outside the Houston area (Hwy290 it is liek 15-20 minutes from where I live in Houston)
http://www.hals.org/

also in hockley is a Drive in pretty cheap on food and ticket fees and hey it is a drive in :)

http://www.theshowboatdrivein.com/

I will see if I can come up with more for you

If he didn't want to go as far north as Huntsville, he could always go to The Woodlands and take a quick trip on their water trail (think San Antonio river walk). I've never taken it, but it's very cool there.

Also on the north side, there's this quaint area called Old Spring Town or something. It has a German theme, but it's really cool. German food, shopping, etc.

Going south I-45, they've got a dog track. No idea on the name. Just have passed it up a few times.

Oh and if you want to gamble, you can drive a couple hours east on I-10 to Lake Charles. River boat casinos are just past the Texas state line.

Some radio stations you can check out to kinda gauge what's going on in the city based on your interests.

FM
97.5 - espn radio (I think)
97.9 - hip hop
99.1 - cool music mix pop/r&b
102.1 - adult contemporary r & b
103.3 - hip hop/reggaeton
104.1 - pop
95.7 - pop (I think)
I get 95.7 and 97.5 mixed up.
96.5 - adult contemporary pop, I think
93.1 - country

Don't know any rock stations, sorry. but it wouldn't be hard to find any.

Houston Chronicle - www.chron.com is check out the local newspaper. They've got an entertainment section to kinda give you an assist.

Have fun.

I just came back from a week in houston last saturday.

Go to House of Pie on Westheimer. Mmmmmm pie.

Screw the Galleria. I went there twice (my cousin who we stayed with lives right near it) and it was even more enormous and crowded than I remember it being back the last time i went in 2000.
