What to do with Byron Jones

Jones has been our best CB the last two years and depending on which stats you look at, one of the better CBs in the NFL over that stretch. Yes, he seemingly can't catch a football. But I saw an Archer stat that said in 2019, 30 passes were completed against him in 60 targets. That 50% completion percentage would rank 9th amongst CBs.

But he's going to cost you some cash though, that's for sure. The flipside is Nolan seems big on turnover generation and that's really not Jones' forte.

I was largely against paying him that much but then I saw Awuzie get worse this year and that has me all confused now. I was banking on Awuzie improving and then we would either throw Lewis out there to replace Jones or draft a kid. But now, with Awuzie seemingly a lost cause, if you let Jones walk, you likely need two new CBs.

Decisions, decisions...........

Much of their lesser performances were coaching and schemes, all fell apart even more. And the talking heads non pass rush on a consistent basis.

But what to do with Jones? Good question. Depends on his contract. Like Hitchens, good enough to want to keep, but do you pay his price of what another team wants to pay.
I will wait and see, if MM and staff want to keep him, I will back them. But what else can a fan do, you back them or whine.

I was for re-signing him before MM was hired. Now, I think d-line should be the priority along with re-signing Brown.

Jones is a solid player, but is he worth the money teams will throw at him? I don't believe he is.

As for Awuzie, I think there is still hope. I think he tuned out the stale message the d-coaches were giving the D. It happens. Perhaps Nolan can salvage him.

It appears this staff place a high priority on interceptions. As good as Byron is and I'd love to see him come back but I think he walks. Hell Stephen singled out Dak and Coop as two free agents returning for sure last week. No mention of Jones....my guess, they will sign a mid-low level free agent AND draft one within the first three rounds.

Pretty sure they'll make Awuzie earn his starting job again.....his confidence was all over the chart.

I would say let him walk, however, we 1. have too many needs at other parts in the defense, and 2. we have too many FA's. I think Anthony Brown and CJ Goodwin are also a FA's. That's 3 CB's. We have too many draft needs to draft another one. We need another DE to compliment D-Law if we don't resign Quinn, 1 or 2 fatty DTs, a safety or 2, a TE, possibly a QB, possibly LB (Sean Lee's future is imminent, who knows about LVE, and Jaylon may be on a downfall).

I say we tag him and Amari and propose we pay Dak a 2 year contract. Then, if he doesn't improve, after we get our needs from the draft this year, we let him walk next season and draft a CB.

I would keep Jones. I like having a quality cornerback, pretty much imperative in the modern game. Too much of a lottery to let him go and draft more cornerbacks.

Unless he makes us a sweet heart of a deal he will walk. Or we sign Cooper or Dak and use a tag on him if we can.

I think there's less downside to moving on from Prescott (easy to find a bus driver at worst) than moving on from a quality cornerback.

We should keep Cooper imo. I think he battled a load of injuries in the second half of this season and we gave up a first round draft pick for him. His overall production is still quality.

Hold back from paying Prescott $40 million, especially with such a supposedly strong QB draft class coming up, then reassess.

No decision for me. Thanks Byron! You're a great guy, a team player, and a solid citizen. But you're also looking to get paid as much as you can and you simply don't generate the necessary turnovers this defense sorely lacks.

Jones is the poster child for lack of turnovers, and will likely command an annual salary of $14 million or more. That's playmaker level money and he's not a playmaker. I want to remake this team's secondary anyway, and not paying huge money for Jones gets that process started.

Let him dip the toe in the FA. Only thing going for him was 2018 season he was ranked one of the best in the NFL.

Flip side of the argument is that he could add turnovers to his game in a better defensive scheme.

Another point is that I would imagine teams threw far less to his side given he was an All-Pro corner in 2018?

I'm ok with letting him walk but i'd feel a lot better with Byron Jones guard a guy like Devante Adams or Michael Thomas then I would Chido or Lewis.

Big athletic corners who can lock players down like him don't grow on tree's.

This is why I hate the Dak contract looming. We're giving up a significantly better player like Byron for a bus driver QB that is a Honda Accord and is going to get paid like he's a Lamborghini.

Get Dak signed ASAP. Then split the franchise and transition tags between Cooper and Jones whichever way you think is best. That way you at least have the option to match any offer or take the picks that will come back. Using the tags may keep other teams away and lessen any deal they do get making it easier to match. No matter what happens with either player, I’d be good with it. I’d love to have both signed long term but I’d also be fine with getting 1st-3rd round picks back for both or having them play one more year on the tag and give the new staff a year to work with to see if they fit the new scheme or start to develop a replacement. Seems like common sense to me on how to handle these three players. Sign your QB if your convinced he’s the guy and they all seem to believe he is. Use the tags on the other two to make sure they stay or you get picks in return. Don’t let any of those three leave for a simple comp pick return, at least until you have a viable replacement ready to go.

I believe re-signing Byron is an absolute must. He was the one consistent thing in our secondary last season. Now if you subtract him from the mix you’re looking at Awuzie and Lewis as your starting CBs in 2020.

Lewis played well last season, but is probably still better suited to play out of the slot than on the outside. Awuzie on the other hand took a huge step back last year and became a liability in the passing game. Awuzie needs to go.
