I try not to overreact to any one game, even after a performance like the Cowboys put on last night. But this is two games in a row now and again we saw the same things that have plagued this team for a long time (other than the two take-aways).
I honestly cannot recall a game that mattered, any game with any teams, where the tackling was as bad as what I saw from Dallas last night. Its a trademark of this defense. Its technique. The way the Cowboys secondary tackles and covers is like they never played the game before.
I don't understand how the Cowboys coaches allowed Jaylon Smith to get isolated covering a WR all night. Smith was able to stay with him but he suffers from the same issue all the Cowboys DBs seem to have, he does not play the ball until the catch is made.
Our $105 million DE was playing against the Bears' backup OT. The only notable plays from him were when he ran himself out of plays allowing Trubisky a huge lane to run through. One went 23 yards for a TD. In general this DL has no discipline.
I know Robert Quinn leads the team in sacks, which is not hard to do, but has anyone noticed that he is a liability in the running game?
How could this defense not be prepared for what the Bears were doing last? All week I heard talking heads saying how Trubisky can hurt you with his legs and how he has to be confined to the pocket where he is less effective as a passer and all night Trubisky was running free, getting outside and hurting Dallas throwing on the run. Again, poor discipline by the DL gave him running lanes and allowed him to break containment.
Maybe the talent on defense is not as good as we thought. Maybe missing Anthony Brown, Jeff Heath, Tyrone Crawford, Antuan Woods and LVE it too much to overcome (which reminds me, I got a little sick and tired of Aikman and Buck bringing up all the injuries to the Bears defense but never mentioning the injuries to the Cowboys defense), but that does not explain everything. It looks to me like this defense plays on its heals, lacks discipline and can't tackle. They are soft. That goes beyond the players. While Seattle's defense is again playing with intensity and purpose I think now Richard is as overrated as some of the Cowboys players.
As for the offense, I have to place a lot of blame on Dak. He has regressed badly over the last 3 games. He was off in New England. He was worse against Buffalo and last night he was by far the worst I have seen him all year when the game mattered. He was inaccurate, throwing behind his receivers or at their feet most of the night. He was throwing without setting his feet and he was throwing some ill-advised passes. On top of that, he looked like he was wearing lead boots. Several times he escaped the pocket by running right into pressure. The pocket presence he seemed to have developed disappeared. Someone called one of his throws a "a panic throw" and that seems like a good description for the first 2 1/2 quarters. Dak is the reason this offense has stopped scoring points that matter. I have supported him as our franchise QB this year, but the last two weeks have made me question my support. This has got to be a serious concern for Dallas.
The problem with last night's game is there were no bright spots. (Maybe Zeke?) There is nothing to take away from this game other than this team was supposedly angry about the loss to Buffalo and they came out and laid an egg again. They cannot stand up to a physical team. I don't see them winning another game this year.
