Look, there was a lot of ugly today. The D looked bad against the run. Tony started off slow (does this actually surprise anyone after three years?) However, what I haven't seen mentioned is an intangible.
It was pretty clear that Tampa was pumped up and came to play. We were blah. You could see the level of excitement in the speed of Tampa's D coming out of the gate. Yet, we overcame that without even seen much of a fire being lit on our side. I just don't remember any games since Tony first came into that Giants game where we beat an opponent that looked like they wanted it more.
What was different? Well, our Special Teams played outstanding. The blocked kick knocked the TB atmosphere down several notches. We also didn't see a whole lot of stupid penalties draining whatever small amount of momentum we had. Tony threw some bad passes but for the first time in years, on a day when it just seemed like nothing was going our way, we had no major drops by key receivers. In short, this was a twilight zone like game to me. It setup like all the other trap games we fell into. They show up, we don't. Yet the ending was so much different.
I have no idea whether this is a trend or a lucky break. Maybe our defense is going to be exploited all year long and we won't have many lucky blown coverages like TB. However, I am going to play the optimist here and say, we came out on a down day and won. When we come in fired up and have some lucky breaks early we are going to dominate. A real test comes next week but I can see another 13-3 like season.
