What were Cowboys needs? (don't read if you satisfied with today's draft)

I think the real complaint on this board has to do with not having picked up a receiver within the first 3 picks. I think receiver is just like the Roy Williams (our strong safety) situations, you would like to upgrade but can't because of the circumstances which in this case was lack of talent in the receiver class and character issues with those who had talent.

As for the Mendanhall/Felix debate I really can't say, I have not seen enough of Jones or any of Mendanhall to make a comparison but from I have read/heard it sounds like Mendanhall and Barber are pretty much the same in which case why would you start a fight between Mendanhall and Barber when Barber is your young pro-bowler??

Man if you can't look forward to the season with enthusiasm even if we had passed in the draft altogether, you're a hard man to please. We've got a very good team and we did shore up our CB and RB positions.

Well I still haven't recovered from us not winning and then having the gaints winning the usper bowl and Eli Manning winning it one year after his brother garbage. I was really excited about the draft and thought we could get something better than what we did. Picking Jones > Mendenhall is really killing me. Like i said i would have preferred the Jenkins pick at 22. It's going to be hard to watch Felix Jones utterly be a bust right in front of us and then sign MB3 to a lot of money only to have him get hurt 1-2 years into his contract. Draft a TE high again when we have the best TE in the nfl. The trades was pointless the effort wasted and the only pick that really has me excite is Choice. Jenkins wont hit the field if pacman is reinstated and this TE i doubt he is going to be anything more than fasano. He might get TD's in the redzone because of his height but other than that its rather lack luster.

meh im not sold on it if he thinks a TE is going to make me of an impact than a WR than we will see. I don't understand the faith he has in Terry Glenn.

You can look back on any teams drafts and pick out lots of guys that didn't pan out. That same combo got us Ware, Witten, Canty, Ratliff, Crayton, Newman, James, and Barber.

If you can find me a team that hit on every pick over a 4 year period, I'd love to see it
I don't recall saying "everypick ", plus I'm pointing out that this guy can't stand Jerry Jones running the draft and that same guy misses Parcells. Parcells wasn't so great with using high rounds picks IMO.

The thing I like about this draft is our needs matched the the strengths of the draft class. Both RBs and CBs were rated strong this year and we got two each. It made me sick watching Brady and Manning slice and dice our secondary with Reeves and jones in there. Hopefully with our two draft picks and if Jones is allowed to play this year that will be a distant memory. And on offense it seemed like we were passing too much to compensate for our running game even with Barber. Hopefully the two RBs we drafted will help rectify that. I really liked this draft. And I think we will have an experienced vetran wide reciever before training camp. Their usually always available and they understand the game better than any of the rookies would have anyway.

We seriously addressed 2 of our priority needs big time by drafting 2 players at each position. That's good. We also drafted another 2nd round TE to replace another 2nd round TE who didn't fit our needs. We added a DE/LB most never heard of. Did add a 3rd round pick & a 4th round pick in 09.

But...

1. Totally failed to address WR position so Jerry Jones better be right about our WRs if TO goes down; I don't think he is. Can Felix Jones or M.Bennett add enough to passing attack?
2. Didn't add an OG/C to challenge Proctor & certainly not Kosier. Proctor was unable to clean the pocket for Romo/overpowered by DTs.
3. Didn't address SS position. We only got RWilliams so better hope he doesn't get hurt/suspended. FS Hamlin probably moves to SS but who steps up at FS cause Watkins hasn't shown much improvement since rookie season; too soon to know about Courtney Brown.
4. Didn't draft an ILB who can stop the run or good in pass coverage. Got no problem with Zack Thomas for 1-2 years but Burnett becomes FA after 08 season. Is he our future ILB starter or does Bobby Carpenter finally show he's the starter at ILB.
5. No DT so guess we go with Ratliff & Tank Johnson (who becomes FA after 08 season).

I'd give us a B for Day 1; C/D for 2nd day. IMO, not a promising start to Cisowski (sp?)/Jerry Jones/Phillips/Garrett management team. I found today very depressing & that makes me very sad. This draft reminds me of the drafts Jerry Jones ran before we got Bill Parcells & before Jeff Ireland took over as head of scouting. Don't miss Parcells but we sure miss Ireland.
wow. didn't like day 2. they positioned themselves very well for the 09 draft to move up and get an impact guy in the first round with all of those extra picks and they are sitting there currently with a roster that is certainly a contender.
Plus their first 2 picks today were very good value.

I really believe this 08 draft will be one of our all time best in 5 years.

I don't think Fasano is as athletic as Witten. But Bennett has the size and athleticism to help on the line in a two-tight end set and, perish the thought, if Witten gets hurt.

How many extra picks next year did we get? I didn't watch much of day 2.

I don't understand why having two bruising backs is a bad thing?

This was nothing like those draft. It was a great beginning with the new regime. We addressed all our big needs completely. The other stuff you mentioned are guys that just fill out a roster and nothing but backups. You can't fill those spots with high draft picks either.

the Problem with a vet WR is that this team has 3 WRs that dont play teams unless we get Crayton to fair catch punts for the 4th year in a row!

Choice made this draft... now we have a guy that can take the load between the 20s while barber does what he does best!

I wanted Mendenhall because MB3s agent is Drew Rosenhaus... nough said! When asking for his 60 mil Drew has bargining chip! If anything drafting Mendy gives the Boys options in the offseason....

Here's what our needs were.

DB is a big need. I think every team needs one though. It was less of a need with the Jones signing although he may not play.
RB to compliment Barber. Barber won't carry the entire load although I think he can but I like the 2 back thing we had with JJ. We filled that need with Felix Jones.

The rest of the needs were just depth needs. Specifically LB and WR. We have 5 good offensive linemen so we are set there. And we have a couple capable backups. Maybe could have used one more. Bennett is a recieving threat more than a blocking TE. I think that filled our WR threat some. But we have 4 good ones anyway. And Witten is one of the best TEs in the game today. Any WR we get this year is going on the bench. Next year we probably need a WR in the draft because Glenn is gone for sure. TO won't be here much longer. But Hurd and Austin may have stepped in by then and shown themselves to be capable.

extra 3rd(cleveland) and 4th(detroit)

We will trade for a WR.

And the CBs still think Glenn will heal.

Excellent draft--with no glaring needs we have the luxury of taking a chance or two.

Totally disagree with the original poster on this. I feel we did a very nice job of getting pretty much what we needed to get our hands on.
