My wife stopped by a convenience store late last night on the way home. She parked between a truck to her right (she later found out was parked there all day because the owner went somewhere with someone else) and a car on the left. She noticed a man sitting in the drivers seat in the car with both windows down and not doing anything. She did not immediately get out of the car and wanted to see if the man moved, She has always had a bit of paranoia and always giving advice about what to do in certain situations. This guy had her radar up. After about three or four minutes of stalling she finally got out of the car. As soon as her foot hit the pavement, the man opened his car door to get out. She hurriedly walked in ahead of him to the store but kept monitoring where he was in the store. She again was trying to stall for him to leave first and he was just would not make a move to the counter. After several more minutes he finally went to teh counter and purchased a lottery ticket and went outside. My wife then paid out and saw he had gotten back in his car and she hurriedly jumped in her car and locked the doors. The man then backed his car out but backed it behind her and at an angle where he totally blocked her in. She had no room to manever frontwards or backwards as he had put his car in a position where she could not move an inch. The man then proceeded to get out of his car and was walking up to my wifes door. She was scared to death and just laid on the horn. The clerks came running out to see what was going on and the man jumped back in his car and sped off.
She kept asking me what else could she have done at that point. First thing I told her was if she felt anything was wierd then to never have gotten out of the car but go somewhere else. But since that option was out, then I told her since her radar was up, she should have asked one of the clerks to escort her to her car and make sure she gets going. With that option now out what other options did she have when she was cornered. If he comes up to the car window and she feels threated then I told her to ram the hell out of his car. My problem with that is if he is up to no good and he has a weapon then he could feel threatend and shoot my wife. I finally told her what she did was right. Laying on the horn was her best option. But if she took the other option of ramming his car, what legal right would she have. Does Stand Your Ground apply here? And would stand your ground apply to the guy who was blocking her in? Who would be in the right as far as who is the agressor?
I usually play scenarios off in my head to what would I do and how would I react in certain situations. But most of the time I am oblivious to what is going on around me. She on the other hand always has her radar going full blast and thinking there is something bad just around the corner. It is a joke in our house that we can't sleep with the windows open on cool nights because that burglar who has been waiting by our window for 17 years finally can come in since we opened it. The fact this guy cornered my wife scared me for her. It was always my thought the worse thing that could happen is that someone would approach her in her car and for her to keep her window rolled up and get out of there as quickly as you can running over them in the process if you need to. If the guy wanted her purse he would have to take her arm with it because she aint giving her purse up for anybody.
I have put off getting a gun for a long time but I am really thinking of finally doing it. If I would have had it in that same situation, I am not sure how it would have ended especially knowing if I was cornered.
Any other options here you guys can recommend.
