What would it take to get a run stuffing DT?

With a run stuffing DT this defense would be completely different. What would it take in a trade?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but Marinelli wants DT's to shoot or control individual gaps. He isn't looking for a DT to run over an offensive lineman or tie up several of them. He won't ever approve some mammoth slow guy.

Effectively the answer to your question is: Change the defensive philosophy

Rod is gone after this year anyways. This is Jason's chance to save his job. Don't think that he wont toss Rod under the bus.

I thought he was gone after last year. Not only wasn't he gone but he still had enough stroke with our front office to dictate our first draft pick this year. A pet cat reach who has done nothing so far.

I reviewed all run of 5 or more yards by the Eagles.

There were 2 plays where maybe a bigger/stronger 1-tech DT would made the run a couple of yards shorter but it would not have been a significant impact.

Most of the run defense issues have been with regards to the scheme and players being out of position because offenses have schemed to make that happen.

When fans are going to learn if they wanted the type of run-stuffing DT some been asking for years, he would already be on this team.

I haven't watched that closely but a lot of teams use the SS in run support on running downs and we used to use Church quite a bit in run support. Are they doing that with Woods or Heath this year?

@clff15701 Well, it depends on what you want. Who are you looking to acquire? Got any specific targets? Names? I saw a headline that the Jets are rumored to consider trading DT Leonard Williams.

Without giving up high draft picks (a first, second, or third), you are not getting any player much better than what is currently on the team.

Rod doesn’t play that,so you’re not going to be drafting for another idea. Even then...doesn’t seem to be Dallas’ interest to beef up the middle of the line. I’m just asking for one guy...not the moon. Dallas’s response? “Motion denied”

Yes Woods....he’s not good enough though. Wilcox type....for depth that’s good, not as starters though. Need to be smart steady tackler and consistent one. I think this year being such weak backend might get them moving in that direction.

How many really good run stuffing 1T are there. When was the last good 1 drafted high?

not sure Terrell Mcclain has anything left in the tank, but he has played well in the system...

I was thinking more on the line of a Suh. We got Quin for basically nothing so wondering what it would take to get a legit run stopper.

It would take a different DC.. One that believes in having a DT like that. What we do now is to have smaller and quicker DT that is supposed to get up field. If they do that then it crashes the back field. When it don't then its up to the LB to fill gaps and stop the run.

We play a 1 gap defense. A big run stuffing NT would make us better in... you guessed it... only one gap.

1 gap run defense is more about being sound across the whole front seven than needing one big Vince Wilfork type guy.

In fact, the whole league has moved to one-gap systems because it makes pass rushing easier. Even Bill Belichick, who built probably the archetypal 2-gap DL with Richard Seymour - Vince Wilfork - Ty Warren, doesn't run that scheme any more. The guys who run a 3-4 usually use some version of Wade Phillips' offset-NT one gap scheme.
