What you’re really mad about

First of all, like everyone else I was disappointed with a lot of yesterday’s performance. This team can’t seem to avoid shooting itself in the foot or getting everyone hurt. We gave the hawks 4 points on special teams alone yesterday, which would have made that last drive only needing a FG to tie instead of a TD. And Russell Wilson is probably the best QB in the league right now too.

But this thread isn’t about what went wrong yesterday or why we lost. It’s about why I think after only 3 games of this season, so many fans are frothing with anger about this season’s start.

So here it is...and most won’t like it...Too many Cowboys fans aren’t just mad about the losses. They are mad about having their unrealistic dreams dashed. What do I mean by that? Here’s a short list of some weird things too many of our fans think:
  • Thinking 30 something DTs who used to be really good, and are “affordable free agents”, are just “plug and play”, making our DL back to above average. Aldon Smith may be the exception.
  • Thinking we’re always “a player or two away” on either side of the ball. That’s a Jones blue Koolaide sales point, not a realistic assessment. (Like thinking getting ET solves the S position)
  • Thinking our roster is better than it probably is. I understand. It’s what many fans do. Everyone we draft and every FA we sign is gonna be great. Tap the brakes.
  • Thinking our QB must always be Superman, capable of always making all the big plays, never making a mistake, and must always carry this team beyond what it is. And for a price below market value.
    • Side note: We have been spoiled as Cowboys fans going all the way back to Don Meredith, who was an excellent QB nearly run out of Dallas by silly, perfectionist fans who don’t really appreciate how hard it is to find a good QB.
  • Thinking a new veteran HC is somehow an instant miracle worker. No OTAs, very little TC and no preseason games, yet he’s expected to take this roster and whip it into an instant Super Bowl contender with at present, 8 starters out with injuries, while starting two undrafted OTs, a rookie CB, and several other backups. Yeah, that’s realistic.
  • Forgetting we have had issues with culture and accountability for years because of Jerry’s interference and sugar daddy habits. That doesn’t change overnight either.
Instead of getting mad at your own unrealistic expectations, perhaps take a deep breath and realize several important and positive things remain:
  • We are less than a fourth of the way into the season. There’s time for many of these younger players to improve.
  • Some of the silly, sloppy mistakes this team keeps making are coachable. We will see how good this coaching staff really is.
  • Some injured players will be back sooner than later.
  • This team has a lot of problems, especially on defense. If you are surprised at this defense’s performance so far, you have drunk some Koolaide. It will probably take some early round draft capital on defense to get significantly better.
  • We play in the NFC LEAST. Enough said.
The season has 13 games left assuming we don’t have some viral wave hit us. That’s an eternity in the NFL. And have a good stiff drink tonight. I prefer bourbon or tequila over Koolaide any day. Might even make you feel better!

I am mad because the defense is terrible and it’s 2 stars - Lawrence and Smith - are absolutely terrible. I am also mad at Xavier Woods. He had the worst game of his career. He is just not a starter.
I understand. But maybe our expectations were higher than was warranted. Xavier Woods was 6th round pick for a reason. He’s a solid NFL player. Starter quality? No. But too many fans see every draft pick as a star in the making. I think DLaw is a huge disappointment but I also think he’s hurt and has never been the same since his injury in 2018.

What has me upset more than anything are the mental mistakes that just keep happening. While I was indifferent to the hiring of MM, I was hoping it would change the mental aspect of the players. We all heard how they were not held accountable by JG. Seems like they aren't any more accountable with MM either. They continue to make stupid plays at the worst time, on both O and D. Until they get that solved, this team is not going anywhere. And the excuse of no offseason, TC etc is over. They have played way more snaps at this point then they would in 4 pre seasons combined. It's time to quit making excuses for these coaches and players.

Here’s my issue: The people shouting the loudest are also the ones who predicted we would start 1-2 or 0-3.

Why are they now feigning surprise and anger? Especially given the two losses were more competitive than most of that bunch predicted?

You don’t get to say we’ll lose to Seattle by 20, then pitch a fit when we lose it in the final minutes. That’s simply indicative of someone who always insists on being negative no matter what.

Im mad cause it still seems like JG is here....

Hopefully that is because of the lack on time with our new coaches and we get that turned around.
Or maybe all the things you were blaming JG for were not because of JG.

Don't forget Ewok's performance w/all those dropped passes.

He had a whopping 37 yards on the ground the entire game.
$90 million BUST!

This is Garrett's team the new coaching staff has to repair. It's not going to happen overnight!

With no OTAs, shortened TC, no ps games, we were expecting instant turnaround? I’m not one for making excuses, but McCarthy’s honeymoon ended with this team’s first punt in Los Angeles 3 weeks ago.

I am actually not that angry about 1-2, especially with the rest of our schedule and our division and those being close losses with very questionable calls (although, truly good teams overcome bad officiating, ala Bills). I was angry at the time, but after spending time away from social media after a frustrating loss it's not as hopeless as it looks. I probably sound like a hopeless optimist but after the Seahawks game our schedule is piss easy with like half of the games being against the NYG and the WFT.
What I am angry about is probably the special teams decisions, sure they won the Atlanta game but they have made some weird decisions, specifically getting rid of Forbath! He was fine! What was the point of Zuerlein?
I also get frustrated about how much we get screwed on the road. We didn't even call the NFL out like the Saints and the brutal calls that have ensued since.

This is what I'm saying. If it were just being worse than other teams it's one thing. But we make so many dumb plays and penalties that is more frustrating than anything else.

These stupid mistakes create opportunities for coaching to improve. Big Mac and his staff have a big opportunity to show how good they are. Or aren’t, lol.

I'm not happy with the play of the defense, I expect them to play better than they have. Having said that most all defense in the NFL look to be behind the offense as 5 high scoring games taking place yesterday and the same in week 1 and 2. I'm not concerned about these other teams but I do think this defense is trying to overcome learning a new system and have not done a great job of it. I expect to learn a lot more about the players we have on defense as they will either continue to make a lot of mistake or they will pick up what the coaches are expecting from them.

I give Fat Mikey all the credit. I knew losing was going to be more tolerable and enjoyable without our former puppet. And I was right.
