Whatever happened to BPA?

A few days ago in a thread about Ryan Tannehill, I joked that some people favor taking the BPA regardless of need... so long as that player was a guard, safety or center.

It's seems the draft is upon us again and as usual people are trying to fill holes with draft picks instead of maximizing the talent taken.

For those of you who are upset we didn't address the OL I want you to consider this. If we come out of this draft with talented players, even if they aren't on the OL, it will in fact help us address the OL in the future and build a better team then we would have otherwise. How is that?

Consider Morris Claiborne. If Mo turns out to be legit suddenly you don't have to sign Jenkins. If Kyle Wilbur turns out to be a player you could avoid extending Spencer. You can go on down the line and every draft pick that hits will save you cap room. That cap room doesn't go away. You can then utilize those resources to address a need like OL how you ought to address it. In free agency in future years. That way you have a much better chance of filling the hole and have maximized the amount of talent your cap room buys overall.

I know some of you are impatient and want to address OL now. But odds are any OL other then maybe DeCastro would not have been able to contribute this year. Even Gurode who turned out to be a good player took several years to develop. Like it or not we have made our bed on the o-line already. And maybe it will turn out we are totally insufficient in that area. But I'm very glad Jerry did not compound the mistake by reaching for guys who could have been had ten picks later.

I'm not saying that it's illegitimate to criticize Jerry if our OL stinks this year. All I ask is that we make legitimate criticisms rather than the "we didn't draft the particular position I wanted in the draft" criticism. Just my two cents.

Getting OG Ronald Leary might help stop some of the crying.

Good pickup but I'm very glad we didn't waste a draft pick on him given his degenerative knee issues.

Is this sarcasm?

I hope it is. If not, wow.

They're over there with Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne and they're throwing MacKenzie Bernadeau and Ron Leary at us to appease us.

I would be more sympathetic to your argument if it was that we should have signed Nicks instead of Carr. In fact I think we would be a better team right now had we gone that route. But the idea we should go into the draft looking to fill holes rather then maximize talent is just silly to me.

I'm fine with maximizing talent, but I don't like the idea of trading up, and giving up even more talent to acquire a single player; unless it's a franchise QB.

Give me the talented players and in the end I will beat the JAGs that are filling a need.

I don't think you have given up talent unless you overpaid for the trade up. I liked the marbles in a bag metaphor masomenos used in an earlier thread. It's all about percentages. Your percentages of landing a good player are obviously lower on the 14th and 45th pick then they are on the 6th pick.

The question is when does the probability of landing a good player in the trade up outweigh the probability of landing good players at the picks you have given up? If you consult the draft value chart we got a pretty good deal. If you further consider that they had Claiborne valued as the number two player in the draft and not the sixth player, I think the value they got is excellent.

Let's be honest. Fans believe in BPA when it matches their pet cat list. I can read magazines and websites till I go cross-eyed. It doesn't mean that I know now more than NFL coaches and scouts. Half of the stuff we read or see on TV is from people that are going by reports from other people. Most don't even watch tape of a player. Now, I read draft info hoping to get a better understanding of the player and what our front office sees, but I'm not a GM, I'm not a scout, and I'm not an NFL coach. You want to run a team? Go check out franchise mode on Madden. Go knock yourself out with your 6th consecutive perfect season.
