Nice post. and Columbo was a reject from wherever he came from. Sort of the same for Davis.
The draft is a crapshoot. You have to play the percentages when you draft. pick a guy who is a football player in the early rounds and then take chances in the late rounds.
A lot of it is just pure luck. Montana a 3, Brady a 6 and Romo undrafted.
Columbo was a first round draft pick from the bears but was injured. They didn't want to keep him and rehab through his injury, he was an easy steal. Davis was considered an underachiever, but was never used in the right for his talent. He was forced to play something he wasn't good at.
Like making any other decision, play the percentages. You will make mistakes, but if you can pick up a troubled player no one wants along the way, why not. Tank Johnson. Terrel Owens.
If you find a player who has a family history of playing football the chances are that this player has potential in his blood. Jason Witten. Bobby Carpenter.
And never overlook the late picks and undrafted. You never know the potential they have and it wont hurt to put them against your starters and other backups to compete for their jobs and keep them in check.
Finally, don't be afraid to exploit different teams' college coaches and trade their proven talent for draft picks. Why not pick up a Wes Welker for a 2nd and 7th round pick.
