What's going on with Caleb Downs?

I'm stilla big fan....but it was odd to me he could not close on Bucky Irving.

He took the exact angle necessary to cut him off. Caleb was never a 4.3 guy. He also caught him and tackled him. Not sure what you want him to do.

I called it when we drafted him. Too small and not strong enough to make an impact. So far, that is what we are seeing.

He’s literally the average size safety and his strength hasn’t been a issue.

I think we need to remind folks the defense might be a little difficult and playing sometimes around trash you pick up a little stink You know your confidence level goes down but we'll see But I always bring this up because people forget Randy White because that was his name Just keep it randy White first two years he played nothing but special teams and he was a role player as a linebacker..

Most people didn't know who the hell Randy White was his first two years in the league other than some dude that plays defense for the Cowboys And then somehow an opening finally came and the coaches got smart Yup even Tom Landry and some great coaching left Randy White at linebacker and special team for his first 2 years And then his 3rd year they moved him into the defensive line and the rest is history he then went from being Randy White to the Master the Masters who we remember but we don't remember Mr Randy White who plays special teams..

Guy in the league right now who used to play with us it just it couldn't get it figured out his name is Malik Collins he's definitely got it figured out now and I don't want that to happen with Downs but I'm saying yes it does take some players longer but how about Chase young dudes impressing people this year That that dude was supposed to be that dude and he wasn't overdrafted disappointment and now he's starting to dominate like he did in college it's not what he did his rookie year he only had 7 sacks but he was supposed to be the next coming of Demarcus Ware type..

I don't know how people are supposed to judge this defense we don't even know where these guys are supposed to be lining up what they're supposed to be doing like what assignments they have and everyone just thinks they know what they see with their eyes!!


just like everyone's blaming Dak Prescott for not playing well in that game he didn't play well he didn't get any help He could have made a valiant comeback and they were on the road beating that team just like they could have beat the Giants had they had more possessions but when you forget that Turpin fumble that balls may not have been perfectly thrown but they were very catchable that is what the tight end Ferguson paid to do if it could go through your hands and hit you with a helmet that ball was more than catchable and how about Flournoy that happened in the Lions game remember bounce off your hands I don't care if it wasn't perfectly thrown Guys couldn't block they couldn't pick up the blitz there was number one game there was no tackling and no defense but all we do is talk about Dak because that's what our memories want to do.

No that's not what I'm trying to bring up here from the game i'm saying be careful what you think you're seeing there's a lot more to it than that and he is part of that flash flood right now in bad defensive play that's all I could come up with as an analogy it's all happening so fast and things are so broke and they're probably overcorrecting or overthinking And everyone's trying to do more than just their job and it's failing they're failing as a group because there isn't many bright spots on that group Once again the defense it's terrible and they're trying to transition I believe it will happen whether it's at the end of year or next year I think Christian Parker and these rookies need ceiling and each time I didn't think it would be this much time when you factor in all the Indies and I don't know what's going on with Parker but I hope in these 10 days he doesn't turn into Matt Eberfluze..

You know where he just keeps sticking to what he's doing no that is not what you need to be doing And that goes to the whole entire coaching staff that's what Brian Schottenheimer just said in an interview that they're going to look at it and they're going to make the changes they need to well that means 87 loses his job I am now making BSF number one and I'm making SchoonMaker Yup I said i'm making number two and I'm demoting Ferguson the number 3 he still can be active but you need to wake him up all the fumbles last year now the tip passes the drop balls I mean it's getting old he can't block either why is he still in there!!!..

They should do this at every position they need to change people like 78 and 87 need to be devoted not cut deactivated but they need to be woke up that this is unacceptable and now you can't pick up the blitz well that's part of those two dudes can't pick up regular blocking let alone blitzes..


But they need to do a serious look across the board now I didn't mean to go outside the subject here but it matters picking on our rookies for not being able to adjust to this it's just the way it was last year the defense is that bad the scheme is not working and yet we're going to blame young kids.

This needs to be a wake up call you have an extra three or four days to evaluate film but if they come out doing the same day thing they're about to lose me too I might get on board with the fire these dudes now because I'm all bored letting coaches coach for a full year and you decide after you see the full resume before you fire them but if they come out with the same joke the same players you keep messing up Emotions need to happen guys need to lose reps not cut not gotten rid of not all of them but you need to wake up the team and by the way if you want to wake up the coding staff then yes fire sons and he's the easiest scapegoat to get rid of because really who you gonna fire and who's gonna replace them if Parker gets fired or shot timer who is not only the head coach but he's the play caller?


I'm sorry for messing up this as just about down but I think it's important to say it about all the team and the coaches during this 10 day break this needs to happen This needs to be seriously rebooted with subtle changes but changes need to be made Most of us see it how could you not see it I'm talking about Jerry and head coach and they need to say these dudes need to be sat down or just simply demoted and get less snaps and go ahead and bump their ego you need to wake them up tell them this isn't good enough because when you're letting them stay on the field you're telling the team you don't care about how they play that you're gonna play people by their depth chart that started at the beginning of the year and that is not how it works heads need to roll..

The main problem is that he's a safety.

Probably the least important/impactful position on any defense. You can have Ed Reid/Ronnie Lott / Brian Dawkins...it won't matter if ur DLine and corners are bad...or even average.

If you are incredibly strong at all the more important positions, THEN maybe you splurge and add the final touch of a great safety.

But we weren't. What we did was order a $30 dollar dessert, when we were having microwave corn dogs for the entree.

Dumb team building. Nothing to do with Downs.

Like I said...a big fan. I watched him at tOSU.

It just took him a lot longer to "close in" than I am used is all.

The way the war room was celebrating and the comments on this board when he was drafted would have had most thinking he’s the next Ed Reed. So far he looks small, a tick late, timid. I get he’s a rookie but what’s his best position? I think he was at least noticeable when he was in slot. The last two games he’s been invincible. I think the giants knew something we didn’t (they passed on him twice) ?

I dont believe Downs is invisible, teams are just not going his way because for the most part, he is doing his job.

Not hearing his name is a good thing. You dont want to hear his name the same way you hear bland name.

Downs is just fine. He also isnt making the same mistake twice if any.

Look it's over reactions we have a bad start of the season allegedly we lost the worst team in the NFL didn't look like the worst team in the NFL the week before..

I mean Green Bay struggled to score 17 points against that defense Cowboys had a bunch of turnovers and mistakes they could have scored 20 points in that game easily probably still would have lost because the defense sucks that bad...

Yes we got 10 days listening to all the pundits and the experts pick up our every little thing on this team when it's really the whole team needs to suck it up and the coaching staff needs to fix this during the 10 day break they need to come with a better depth chart Heads need to roll people need to lose reps things need to change because if it doesn't if the first 3 games that box it looks much like the same yes the Cowboys will be taking very high it won't matter with these rookies have done or not done because it's not their fault Put themselves into a bad situation.

I get it it was a tough loss It hurt it was like Jerry said he's right this was an opportunity to take a step because the big difference being three and 2 versus two and 3 with a lot of football hit you it had a huge loss.

Packers game tells me their defense help a team with a supposed to be good starting quarterback and a really good receiver and they don't have much of a run game but they only gave up 17 points the week before They have been trending upwards even though they were winless look at the pattern Their defense only gave up 17 points the week before and 20 to the week before to a undefeated team and Vikings only gave up 23 points that was a close game these losses are not huge if I don't know who played in the Bengals game was Baker Mayfield or not it doesn't matter That is a big time offense with the Bengals they had all season to pair These people think that it got punished and lose to such horrible team tampa Bay was on the verge of getting figured out and they did it against Cowboys unfortunately..

The Cowboys team played horribly They did as a team coaching and everything all of them all the above they made all the mistakes they they configured out they couldn't get the adjustments and they lost But I think people are over exaggerating except Oh my God that winless team no look at the facts they gave up only 17 points a week before and yes I realize they only go to 14 but yeah we're talking about the Cowboys defense It is what it is The Cowboys can always play perk on offense they were due for a game like that still in the defensive specialty that we lost that game it is what it is yes the offense can play well at all but they had opportunities that couldn't capitalize on because the score just keep growing that's what happens when you can't stop anyone another game to give your offense a chance when they're not playing perfect..

Yet they still had a shot at the end of that game and you get guys like Ferguson and even Flournoy and Turpin these guys keep making mistakes 78 That another one and those that need change..

I wasn't one of the people putting him in Canton after we drafted him so I have no reason to play Captain-Save-a-Safety now that he's not leading ROY odds. Scheme and Xs and Os I leave to you all but will ask this question for consideration: is this the first time Downs is on a team that's NOT talked about as a potential champion? Interested in seeing his performance amongst the defensive adversity.

He ran parrellel with him for 20-30 yards. I don't think "protecting the cutback" for that long without closing in is the best tactic...but Caleb is the expert.

It’s hard to diagnose in this defense and coaching philosophy. He is very talented though and I am not sure he is being used properly…….kind of like Q.

He is a rookie, give him the season at least before the critiques come out.

We once again hired a DC who likes to fit square pegs into round holes.
