What's left of the mediocrity Era? How to Move Forward

There's no getting rid of the Jones', it's impossible. But we can maybe obtain a GM, which I think they stay with McClay. He is drafting well and he would get a job somewhere else in a heart beat. Maybe we can get someone who can crack deals in trades and contracts like the other top tier teams do in conjunction with McClay's work.

Regardless, I highly doubt there will be anyone else with the GM title than Jerry and therefore you won't be able to attract any coach you want because of that. But you will be able to attract coaches who are comfortable with this FO structure.

Anyhow, other than the Jones', the only pieces remaining from the mediocrity era are:

Jason Garrett - Biggest remaining piece
Sean Lee - He's breaking down and it just won't stop. He's not even looking like himself when he is healthy.
Tyron Smith - He is no longer the best book-end in the game and he is starting to break down as well.

In saying this, if we could offload a Sean Lee and Tyron Smith and get some draft picks and/or player for player trade value I believe this would be a good move and 2 of the last contracts that have any dead cap of significance. We would be moving them on their decline and have a totally fresh cap from the old contracts and dead money in 2 years.

Plus we would know what pieces we want to add and what contracts like DLaw we would want to sign long term. I doubt we go heavy on Dak.

2 coaches from College I could see us interested in and who would probably adapt to this structure of FO is Chris Petersen at the University of Washington and the ex Boise State HC.

Lincoln Riley is young at 35 years old and would only have Head Coached OU 2 NCAA season's as of season end. But he's the hot innovative offensive mind that's out there in the college ranks right now and a lot of NFL coaching and GM personnel have been picking his brain scheme wise since he helped Baker Mayfield win the Heisman last year. That's my point, this guy can develop a QB and he's heavy on potential. If it was me I would go after Urban Meyer but he is not leaving his cushy life in Ohio. You can say Jim Harbaugh but he can't beat Meyer anyways.

I would trade for Sean Payton, he would want to be here and he gets along with Jerry, especially if it was just a 1st round pick, but the Saint's won't do that. I do not see any good HC candidates other than Josh McDaniel's from the NFL assistant rankings and he's staying with the Pat's to be their HC anyways. The Pat's aren't looking like themselves offensively either.

So in saying all of this. What do you all think about these idea's and what would you suggest?

Agree to keep McClay - he's done a nice job getting pieces for us and managing our finances. We've got a lot of young talent on defense and bucketfuls of money to pay them, both due in part to his management.

Garrett needed to be gone by 2013.

Lee and Tyron probably don't have much trade value because of their mileage and injuries. Tyron especially has really slipped recently. But we've got nothing else at LT, and Lee's contract is pretty cheap and up soon enough. I'd keep them both for now unless I got a crazy offer. Maybe pawn Tyron for a 1st if someone's dumb enough to offer it, I don't think you could replace him for a second.

Chris Peterson would be an awesome hire.

Stopped reading here. He had like 6 tackles on the first 6 plays of the game. Obviously, he's going to be injured, and it is only going to get worse. When he's on the field, he's the best player on the defense.

His tackles are not what we're used to seeing. He obviously has his instincts but I think the impacts are taking the toll on his tackling. Last 2 weeks he's player well but these running backs are giving him a very hard time on tackles.

Again, not the way this operates man. Remember, the HC has no say who he works with. Which is why only a puppet like Garrett could function here.

Tyron - trade
Garrett - gone by week 6
Linehan - gone with Garrett

Make Kris Richard HC ( interim), keep Marinelli DC

The way Garrett has this staff set up, we're stuck because even if we fire him and Linehan, who coaches the offense and calls the offensive plays? Kellen Moore?

Marinelli would be the next man up to Interim HC because he's the DC, Richard couldn't just jump over Marinelli. Marinelli is retirement ready and isn't interested in being a HC.

So basically, Garret is here until seasons end. The only change that is realistic is him calling the plays and taking it away from Linehan and I doubt that would be anymore positive.

Long ugly season and we're better off cleaning up all the rest of the mediocrity before the trade deadline. Rebuild by keeping what's young and talented and trading what's aging, still talented but declining and can get you draft picks. We have cap space now which will carry over and my understanding is that if the player is traded this season, their hit all goes into this cap.

Can't say I disagree because I do not. In knowing they are going to be involved in personnel and will probably remain with McClay and who he would probably choose as HC, the realistic adjustments to this team are what I am discussing. A new HC would be a must and veteran talent is the next easiest adjustment.
