From the heart, me hardy.Shakespeare famously wrote something centuries ago that very aptly applies to our owner and his son in their front office talk and actions: ”What’s past is prologue.” (From the play “The Tempest”) The idea behind that statement simply means what has been done in the past is the context for what will happen in the future.
After 28 years of winning 4 wild card playoff games with the same two guys fully in charge, we all should know by now what these guys are going to say and do in a typical off-season. Below is a checklist of the things I expect to see and hear from Jerry and Stephen this off-season leading up to the regular season. With these guys, the past is certainly the prologue. Here are some samples with evidence from the past.
SOME STATEMENTS/PHRASES WE WILL HEAR IN THE NEXT FIVE MONTHS
HERE‘S WHAT I WILL BELIEVE IN 2024: I love the Cowboys, always have and always will. I want them to win and will be thrilled if they win a bunch of playoff games next year. But I will believe they are a great team when they actually win a divisional playoff game for the first time since since Jan, 1996. Nothing anyone associated with what this team says matters. It’s WHAT THEY DO THAT MATTERS.

- ”Here’s our definition of ALL IN.” (It is not “All in”) https://www.foxsports.com/stories/n...l-in-for-2024-heres-what-that-could-look-like
- ”I have complete confidence in _________.” (Mike McCarthy, Dak, SJ, JJ, Rowdy, any draft pick or FA we acquire) https://www.kxan.com/sports/sports-...ry-reveals-optimism-on-mccarthy-dak-contract/
- ”______ is in the best shape of his life.” (So what?) https://sports.yahoo.com/why-jerry-...good-an-opportunity-to-pass-up-174748317.html
- Stephen Jones will say, “We do not set the market for any player at any position.” (He will then set the market for QBs with Dak’s extension, and eventually set the market for WRs and LBs with Cedee and Micah’s future contracts, just as he did with Zeke and Dak earlier) Here’s an article from 2019 where he said this: https://www.nfl.com/news/stephen-jones-cowboys-won-t-be-a-market-setter-0ap3000001038182
- Stephen will tell us why we can’t sign the free agents we all know we need this year to get competitive. (He’s been saying it for years! https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2009/feb/28/commentary-salary-cap-limits-cowboys-buyi-20090228/)
- Jerry may show the media the team’s draft board to justify drafting a player (while 31 other GMs will protect there’s like govt secrets) He’s done it before: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...oys-draft-board-with-kayvon-thibodeaux-at-top
- Jerry will be more “optimistic” about the 2024 team than the 2023 team. We’ve heard this before. https://www.wfaa.com/article/sports...stic/287-b1420776-2629-4cde-a6a6-e15770997d2f
- Jerry will cry at his annual “State of the Cowboys“ beat down of a presser when talking about what this team means to him. (He cries almost every year) https://news4sanantonio.com/sports/...-crying-as-jerry-jones-kicks-off-cowboys-camp
- Jerry will cry and act surprised at the team’s playoff loss every year. He’s been doing it for years. https://www.foxsports.com/stories/other/jerry-jones-admits-hes-cried-real-tears-after-three-losses
Well done! As a lad in an Essex chair factory I took time to read during union shutdowns and ponder the linguistic/literary greats.
From whence they come? I wondered.
Well, perhaps from places such as the Cowboyszone.
