is it possible to get a good one for that amount? I usually get my music stuff for the kids at Musician's Friends but I have no idea about acoustic guitars.

I'm no Joe Satriani, but I own/have owned many acoustics and my favorite is EASILY the Ibanez AEL10 . When I'm in the mood to play, this is the one I reach for...and as a bonus, it's an electric/acoustic with an onboard tuner. Great for a beginner as well as seasoned players. It's just a hair above your price range (though you can find them much cheaper on eBay), but it's something to think about.

Don't laugh too hard! I bought Esteban's big set for my sister a couple years ago and seriously...she shreds. The difference in just a few weeks was dramatic.

And no, I am not on Esteban's (Or Ibanez's) payroll.

Go to Guitar Center and find one you like. Don't just take peoples word for it as everyone has their own preferences. Always play it before you buy it.

My uncle bought one. The guitar is ugly as sin, (not the one in the pic) but he likes it. I didn't play it so I don't know the quality of it, but he didn't pay much so I wouldn't expect much out of it.

Now, one thing to remember is acoustics come in a few flavors. Make sure you know which type you are looking for. Esteban's is a classical acoustic. (probably not what you are looking for)

Look here to ensure you know what type you are looking for.

If you are just straight up looking for an acoustic, you probably want a cutaway dreadnought.

If you bump your price to $450, the Taylor Big Baby has unreal sound for the price. Guitar Center carries them in store, so check it out.

Did you ever see those Hello Kitty Fenders that were out there? (I see that is one is made by Squire, so it probably has the Fender licensing too)

Here is a pic of them, but I've seen other ones too.

I used to always see them in GC, but not lately. I guess that fad went away. (thank <insert your deity here>)

Speaking of Strats, I returned the Strat I bought. It was a beautiful guitar, but it just didn't play the thump and crunch like I wanted it. I never really noticed when I had one way back when. I guess thats because of the Ragu Effect* when the Fender is applied to heavy metal.

* You think something is good when it isn't because you haven't had anything better to compare it too.

Used to talk to a dude on one of the guitar forums. He played for some Metal band (not famous) and he had a video of him and a buddy just sitting around playing some slayer. He pulled out the Hello Kitty strat and kicked into Raining Blood...sounded pretty good lol. Just funny seeing him thrash around playing that song on a pink hello kitty strat.

For 300 dollars get this one that is easy to play.
