What's the Cowboy's identity ?

I couldn't help but feel that the Cowboys developed some identity on defense this year, but our offense is hard to figure. We aren't a power running team and we did not show the balance that would indicate that teams have much to fear from this team. If teams were able to stop the running game, they could then scheme to get a solid pass rush.

I founfd it difficult to understand how this team could look so solid at times and then play a dreadful game. The last Washington game vs the Carolina game illustrates my point. Which Cowboys team will we see next year and what will it's personality be?

Your answer lies with injuries and youth......

Everyone is whining about going from 7-3 to 9-7, yet they don't look for the reasons.....

Losing Flo killed us this year. We had to keep more people in to protect Drew, and couldn't help more with Pettiti.

The youth of Tucker and Pettiti hurt too......they just couldn't recover when a vet found a way to beat them.

If we stay healthy, we should be pretty salty on offense. Well-balanced.

...but would like to add that the veterans who were on this team provided no additional help in stabilizing this team when challenges began to arise.

We need to find some replacements to our vets who are unable to perform to the level it takes to win games.

I think we're basically a middle of the pack type team.

While I expect our defense to be better next year, at least statistically, I don't know how much we're willing to spend to fix the OL.

I think JJ/MB are capable backs. I think Witten, Crayton, Key, and Glenn can get the job done. But unless we can block upfront, it's really pointless to harp on all of these "skill" positions, IMO.

In a bizarre way, one big positive after today's loss to the Rams is that it is clear that our OL is miles away from being a Super Bowl calibre line. And the best way to help the offense is to get consistency on the OL.

Their identity is:

Play conservative game if the coach feels the other team is an offensive powerhouse.

Play close games and lose because of conservative play.

Once in a while open up the playbook and let'er rip and really kick butt and give us a glimpse of what the Cowboys could be if they wanted to.

Get out-coached, out-efforted, and out-thought.

Thats this teams identity.

Flo will be back, TO will be here, and we will draft o-line and a safety, maybe sign a LB and we will be set

...the bolded parts.

I think we lose close games because we don't have the elements to control close games - namely LBs to fill running gaps, safeties who keep plays in front of them, kickers who convert high percentages kicking distances and an offensive line that allows runners to average at least 4 to 4.5 yards for the season.

The Cowboys are only capable of what they have accomplished this year. When they open up the playbook and "go for it" they haven't always suceeded. They are not the Rams of the 98-2001. Let's not kid ourselves.

Nice post. Upgrading the offensive line will be a priority. BP knows that, he just didn't have anybody else to throw in there. He had to see what Pettiti and Tucker could do. Pettiti has a lot of work to do next year. He needs to get stronger, lose more weight and get quicker feet. That said, I still think we bring someone in next year for RT. We will have Tucker to back up a healthy Flo.

This team is a work in progress......I am looking forward to next season!!!

Our identity? Prolly something along the lines of...

Hey, we aren't great at this, but we're not too bad either. At what exactly? Basically all facets of the game.

In short, no real identity.

Great question. BP's mantra is control the ball on offense with a running game and play great defense. He almost completely fixed the D last off season and will do that to the O this off season. Next year we should see that identity really blossom.

I disagree. Parcells is a dynamic defensive coach and our Defense had a dynamic flaire about it. It clearly had a "Bill Parcells" identity. But our offense had a "Sean Payton" identity. I don't have faith in Parcells rebuilding the offense based on many questionnalbe moves he made on offense, like not buildibg OL depth and turning hte OL coaching duties to a TE coach who never had coacghed OL before. Also, relying on Sean Payton has proved to be a mistake. I think Payton is an indecisive O-coordinator. His offense in Dallas mirrored the same "Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde" identity that it did in New York when he coached the Ginats' offense. Until we overhaul the offenssive coaching staff our offense will not improve.

We have no identity. WE're just like all the other middle of the pack wannabe's and until we put some Fire behind Parcells butt, and get some OLINE, kicker, and more LB'r help here, we will continute to be a nobody.

Several good points! That is what I was trying to say when I put "He almost completely fixed the D last off season and will do that to the O this off season." in there. I guess I didn't get specific enough. He needs to start at the top with Peyton no doubt. Giants fans have to laugh at our offense now. Thanks for bringing all that up.

No problem BDC. Do you have confidence in Parcells rebuilding the offensive coaching stafff or do you think he'll stick with what he's got and just try to bring in different players? I have a feelig it will be the latter, and if that happens I think we'll have the same problems where Peyton miss-uses the talent he has.

Rowdy? At first I was going to reply to your response with "How childish". But the more I think about it, I think, "How TRUE!!!" for the Dallas offense at least.

Rowdy has more skills then most of our Olinemen. I actually seen Rowdy knock people around unlike our Olinemen who GETS knocked around.

Actually I don't have the confidence he will rebuild the coaching staff. He may change a couple of them just to make a change and without making a big impact. I expect the same approach on offense next year with a handful of new players. I'm not overly stressed because he likes to run the ball and I think we will improve enough to do that fairly consistently next year.
