What's the deal with Maurice Hurst?

I know he was flagged at the combine for an irregular heart beat (not a huge deal, happened with Star Lotulelei as well, caused him to slide but has had a very good career thus far).

He then was cleared by Dr's and had his full pro day workout.

Does anyone know if there are still concerns over that heart condition? Or is the lack of hype surrounding him strictly due to his lack of ideal size (6'2" 292) and being overshadowed in what has shaped up to be a pretty strong DT class? There aren't 10 better football players than Mo Hurst in this class, if he's still on the board entering day 2 he would be one hell of a value.

So if our draft looked something like

Vea
Hurst
MLB ie Jewell/Lenard
RB ie Hines/Wadley
OG ie Corbitt/Madison

How would you feel?

Thrilled.

I personally don't believe Vea will be there, so I'm holding out hope for Da'Ron Payne. Payne and Hurst would be a similar coup as to when the Panthers changed their defense overnight with Lotulelei and Kawann Short.

You give me Jewell in the 3rd and now that's a defense we can lean on.

Investing in the ground game with our 4th round picks would complement a stout defense nicely, and what I hope the Cowboys one day realize.

I was down on him because I thought he was too small but then he showed at the combine weighing 292. He looks great on tape but his pro day was uninspiring to bad. The jumps were straight bad.

2nd round sounds about right.

Star wasn't all that great there. He wasn't able to overpower guys like he was able to at Utah. That is my concern with Vea.

I'm holding out hope for Vea. I think Washington has more pressing needs, but you draft to win your division and he would help against our Oline so it makes sense. If he gets past Washington I think he has a good chance of making it to us unless someone traded in front of us. I'm down with Payne as a consolation prize though.

He was very good early on, Kuechly's best years where when Lotulelei was at his best including that SB run, but has had some nagging injuries as of late. Still had enough value on the open market to net a $50 million deal from Buffalo, which is a top 10 DT contract in the league. Not too bad for a space eater.

It's certainly possible, and would be a slam dunk type of selection... but there's a reason slam dunk picks don't line up too often. He's very talented, and the 18 other teams picking in front of us know it as well.

The point is that he was supposed to be more than a space eater. It's relatively easy to find guys who can sit down on double teams. He was supposed to be a Vince Wilfork or Haloti Ngata force of nature type that blows up interior protection and ragdolls NFL OL. I'll never forget Ngata spearing and bowling over Martin his rookie year.

People watch Vea's tape against Richmond and want that type of performance.

You're right, the last time it happened was '09 with Smith. We traded up for Dez but him being in range was what made it a slam dunk, maybe a similar scenario plays out this year.

Agree, he was touted as the potential #1 pick early in the process that year. Hasn't lived up to that hype. Good player, but not the overwhelming force he was once billed as.

Vea is a much larger man than Lotulelei, and has rare power. I don't really remember Ngata coming out of Oregon, a little before my time of becoming a draftnik, but I can see why he gets compared to him. I do seem to recall Ngata being a more refined product than Vea.

Ngata was arguably the most physically dominant player in the NFL for a period of time, expecting THAT kind of impact is unrealistic. Kind of like comparing a Guard to Larry Allen. Some guys come along that are just on a different tier of strength, even among NFL peers.

'11 not '09

Yeah, and Smith was a top 10 pick... in what wound up being a loaded draft class to boot.

It could happen, we're sitting right on the fringe of what I'd consider the first tier drop of the draft class. We may luck out.
