Did you know this wasn't scripted? I think the name was scripted, but when someone giggled, he ran with it. (I heard that, but I wouldn't trust its veracity completely. But it seems very possible, and why would someone make it up?)
Yes and no, it was scripted and they had actually shot that scene numerous times, but Michael Palin started ad-libbing at the end to keep it fresh. The actors where told to stifle their laughs, at least somewhat, but after so many takes, Palin knew he needed something at the end and ad-libbed the wife's name. Partial script, partial improve, Palin drew the skit out trying to think of a name for the wife and that made it harder for the others to hold their laughs, then improved the wife's name. That drawing out and improving the name broke the actors at the end and all their laughter was genuine.Did you know this wasn't scripted?
