What's wrong with Choice?

I know it has probably been answered somewhere, but I have not read a good reason why Garrett does not appear to care for Choice. He doesn't play special teams, or didn't, he fumbled away the Washington game, and he isn't the best blocker, but the kid can run the ball.

What is it the got him in the doghouse?

Two things, a little bit of an attitude, and he is not real sharp on blitz pickups. Also, he doesn't play Special Teams and that hurts backup RBs a little.

Good player though.

Doesn't bring much to you on Special Teams either.

I wish he'd improve on the blitz pick ups cause I'm a big fan of Choice. I'd love to see that kid stick around and do some real good things here in Dallas.

He's not a complete back. Sure do like the way he runs, though.

LOL, I went back and added that at the same time you were responding.

I've been told that he isn't a hard worker on the mental aspects of the game but is a hard worker on the physical aspects. He gets by on his running ability but hasn't taken the next step to become someone that can be relied upon.

In a nutshell, Garret doesn't trust him to be where he is supposed to be, doing what he's supposed to do when he is supposed to be there on the field.

I don't think there's a heck of a lot of reason behind the Choice-hate other than his Twitter posts.

He's a fine player, especially as a backup, and I think the only way he should be leaving this roster is via trade.

I don't know they put him in after Felix in the vs Minn. So I don't know if he is in the so called dog house or not. I do think there will be some tough calls to make as the team makes final cuts.

Most likely the big problem for choice last year was that as the 3rd RB he wasn't any good at special teams. Then he wasn't all that good at blitz pick-up. So that meant that he couldn't be trusted in pass protection, which limited garretts play calling, and gave the defense a head's up on what was most likely going to happen (IE a run).

He can run hard all day long, but unless you can do more than run the football you won't make it in today's NFL. And I haven't seen any improvement in his blitz pick up skills since his rookie year. Which tells me he doesn't put any value on it, which is a no-no in Garretts mind.

That is what I mean by a bit of an attitude.

Now that Murray is in the fold, doesn't that make Choice's inability to play STs less of a factor? Are both backup RBs generally factors on STs?

The inability to pickup the blitz is a killer though. He's got to improve there.

I figured. I knew that you knew this about the player as we have discussed it previously.

You got it pegged.

:)

choice is a dime a dozen when it comes to running backs.

Yes, which is why Choice made the team in my 53 man roster prediction and Tanner made the PS.

If he sucks on blitz pickup, why was he in on 3rd down which is a blitzing down? Felix Jones doesn’t play special teams. Attitude wise, all i have seen is a guy that wants to motivate this teammates. I don’t get it, i don’t think i ever will.

It's interesting, when those youtube videos of Choice clowning around in the locker room first came out, he seemed to me like an irrepressible, fun teammate who added energy to the Cowboys. Now, in retrospect with the laissez-faire attitude of Wade Phillips exposed as disastrous for the franchise, the videos seem like symptoms of the disease that brought the team down during the first half of last season.

I don't believe so. I have no real proof of this but, I suspect that the team may actually want Murray to play an increased role early. I think he may be a much bigger part of the game plan then Choice might have been. That means that he probably won't be playing as much STs if true. It never helps your case if you don't contribute on STs as a backup. The whole issue with being unable to pick up Blitz assignments will kill you.

Felix was our Kick Returner for a couple of seasons before they took that spot away.

I can give you an example of attitude. I don't remember the poster, but someone was on a flight with Choice and got to ask him some questions. It was right after TO got released. He was openly negative. You can bet it was not a one time thing either. He also was not entirely supportive of Jason Garrett and you can bet that gets around too.

I like Choice because of how hard he runs. I love his locker room antics. Gump!

But I am not fooled into thinking this guy is entirely about the company he works for. I suspect the coaches feel where he lags.
