I wish we could turn this into a poll. I wanna know the general feeling of Rob Ryan from Cowboys fans. Does everyone think he's a failure? Do you think its the players or lack of offseason that has made it a tough transition? Do you think he can build this defense in a positive way?

I want to hear your thoughts!

As much as I want to blame him... I just can't because the players he had to work with were just awful. Brooking, James, Newman, Ball, Walker, Scandrick, Sensy, Elam, etc. I realize some will disagree with me on Scandrick and Sensy but neither of these guys did squat all year. We need to stop signing guys like this to multi year contracts when they are JAGS.

Brooking and James should have both retired 3 years ago.

he gets a full year or two before I make any decision, but I was not overjoyed with the defense last year and he could take some blame

In 2010 we allowed 437 points. I was hoping for a 100 point improvement in year 1. He got close, 347 allowed.

I'll take it given no OTAs and Mini Camps to really teach his system properly.

With hopefully better personnel I'd like to see a 60 point improvement on 2011. That would be 287. That would put us 5th in the NFL in 2011. With our Offense I think that combination adds 4 wins.

I think it's foolish to think he's a failure. I think he came in here with a lot of hype, promoted mostly by himself and because the defense wasn't where we wanted it, people assume it was a failure...but in reality it wasn't.

Most points given up by a Cowboys defense ever in 2010 and he turned that around. The defense basically went from awful to below average. I think with the hype he was pumping himself, fans would have expected us to go from awful to great in 1-year. But, that's hardly likely under any D-Coordinator.

I don't think he's as good as Rex, but I think he's talented and smart. I do think he needs to get 'his guys', particularly in the secondary. And he seems to have the ability to develop good secondaries looking at his track record. The Browns struggled badly his 1st year because of no secondary and then they drafted Hayden and TJ Ward and dramatically turned around the defense. Same iwth the Raiders as they had Asomugha and company.

Of course, one could say that he really hasn't developed pass rushers. But, he shouldn't have to do much with Ware and Ratliff aboard.

In other words, not a failure...but the jury is still out.

Pretty spot on ... If you are gonna have JAGS on the roster at least have CHEAP JAGS.

Full offseason will help agreed. Plus unlike last year we will be upgrading our talent on that side of the ball . Outside of coleman and elam (Ryan's crash course system guys) we gave him very little and he didnt complain about it i repsect that.

And a as a bonus no more Campo :p:

he came in spouting off about how tough we'd be and we didn't deliver--whose fault is that? (and remember, Ive already said we have not had enough time to condemn him)

I'm not trying to farm anyone else's land here, but he pretty much sucked.

I was all for bringing him in, but last year really shook my confidence in him.

He did ok. What I liked that it proved to Jerry and the fans that the players sucked, and it wasn't the scheme. Bear Bryant couldn't have made this unit any better. He held it together with tape and bubblegum the early part of the season. Remember the NE game? His best game called IMO. Brady couldnt do anything. Get him some players and we will see.

....we have to get over demanding a change in coaching every single year just because things didn't go our way. The Cowboys need coaching competency, consistency, excellent talent evaluation and a steady hand at the helm. It is ridiculous to expect anyone to come in and completely turn things around in 1, 2 or even 3 seasons - whether that is the head coach, coordinators or front line coaches.

And just to head off the Garrett haters... He hasn't been the head coach for the Cowboys in the 5 years he has been here - be intellectually honest...

Oh - and Garrett or Ryan hasn't had the same level of early 1st round and 2nd round draft choices on their squad as Harbaugh enjoyed with the 49er's.

So - Ryan? No off season, limited training camp, no talent.... For the life of me, I don't know how anyone can say last seasons disappointment was his fault and he should be fired... Minimally, give him 2 more years!

While it's part of who he is, it doesn't help Ryan that he runs his mouth so much.

There were quite of few things that he could not help: no offseason program to teach the D, lack of adequate players, and way more injuries than normal.

I would hope we address some of the holes with FAs and the draft. The biggest need is to find another pass rusher. Once we get opposing QBs nervous, the LBs and DBs will look a whole lot better.

Ryan gets one more year, in my opinion, before we call him a dud.

I'm still a fan and I thought he brought plenty of good things to the table, not the least of which was a renewed fire on the defensive side of the ball that I had not seen in quite a while.

One big concern is that when teams seemed to figure him out, he lacked the flexibility to recover. The Eagles did what they wanted to against his defense and he seemingly had no answers.

One other concern, it seemed like he didn't know how to protect a lead and play the percentages. His defense set records for blowing leads in 2011 and much of the issue seemed to stem from his inability to 'take his foot off the gas'. He and Garrett were alike in that trait at several points of the season.

Hopefully another year does both coaches a world of good in that area.

I'd have to give him another year, although, it's clear he's his fathers son, that is concerning. I'm hoping to see more 43 and 46 this year as we have the horses.

My only concern is how our defense laid up twice against the Eagles and how the defense fell apart towards the end of the games against the Giants.

Some in this thread are talking improvement in terms of allowing fewer points. Yes, by all means this is needed. More importantly though is that this happens against divisional foes.

Ryan has had one full season now to learn all about the offensive opposition in the NFC East, so matching up better defensively against it next season should be an area of mandatory improvement.

We cannot keep changing offensive/defensive coordinators every year as each needs a few years to establish his system.

Seriously, though, he's bombastic, and he definitely talks a bigger game than he delivers. That said, year two is typically a better year in the system for his defenses, and we did have some weak spots in terms of talent that we ended up needing to cover up. I like how he mixes his fronts, and I like the general philosophy of the defense. It's not the blitz-happy chaos it was purported to be when he was signed, and that's a good thing.

I expect he's a middling-to-good DC when everything is said and done. A step down from Wade, but a good fit for what Jason wants to do, and a fun defense for guys to play in.

Ryan himself is cool enough. Looking like a pirate and overhyping everyone and anyone they ask you about. Yelling at refs. If he weren't the spawn of the Devil, I'd be ok with him long term. He's not looking to me like a guy that's getting a promotion anytime soon.
