When BP finally leaves, which currently looks to be after the 2007 season. What type of coach or system would you want to finally replace him ?

Since he would have implemented his system and we would have a core of players used to that system by then, would you like to keep it intact or change to a "Newer" thought of system.

Would you want to keep the 3-4 or change back to 4-3 ? Ball control offense or a more open it up quick strike offense ?

Just curious...

43 man to man, bump and run pressure defense. Offensively, I like what we do but more down field passing. Not a complete stretch offensive scheme but ceratainly not as conservative. In short, Saunders.

I guess it would depend, if the players in place at that time are executing the 3-4 and having success with it I continue to run the 3-4. It would make no sense to draft players and get FA who are 3-4 guys and then turn around after 2007 and try to change back to the 4-3. As for offense I will always believe that running a balanced attack is the way to go.

I would want to get a young energetic defensive coach who will be able to work with the players that we have in place and continue to build in the same direction and not change the system for the sake of changeing it. Someone who will then bring in an offensive coach and allow him to run the offense without interferance. Mangini comes to mind; too bad he is going to the Jets already.

When BP leaves we are going outside the current staff for a new coach. Jerry likes to make a splash. However, he will likely try for someone that can work with what BP has built. My first guess would be Charlie Weiss. Next, I'd think Al Groh.

If we stick with the current staff, I'd doubt it would be Zimmer. He just doesn't have the personality for it. My dark horse -- no pun intended -- candidate would be Bowles.

You could be right and I would not be suprised if Bill plays a part in finding his replacement.

He typically does. I'd be very surprised if a Parcell's 'disciple' doesn't take over when he leaves. I think Jerry understood that when he approved the switch to a 3-4.

I've always liked the 3-4 for a variety of reasons, and ball control offenses are proven. Sure we could find something a little more imaginitive, particularly in the red zone, but I'd just assume build a mauling O-line first then we can run whatever we want.

More importantly, BP's is building a good team long-term - when it is time for someone else to take over, this will be a very attractive coaching position -- a good young team, a deep-pockets owner who rehabbed his image and is no longer seen as a meddler, and the highest profile team in the league. Really, it seems like we could get whomever we want..... and BP will orchestrate it.

Also, I wouldn't be shocked if BP stayed on in a GM-ish position focusing on draft and FA evaluation.

Much as I am kinda luke warm about the 3-4, or the version of it that we run, I'd hope we get a coach who wants to utilize it because a little continuity would be nice for this franchise. It was a risk to switch to the 3-4 because we know Parcells is not long term AND very few teams are running it, therefor, coaches with experience will be more difficult to find...that is, unless Pittsburg wins the super bowl.

Offense. I hate this system. I am not a big fan of teams who throw the ball all over the field but this circa 1973 Minnesota Vikings offense is WAY too defensive for me.

Balance would be nice. Balance makes the defense respect the entire field. A balanced offense is more difficult to prepare for.

That would be the route I'd like to see us take.

IMO the less other teams are running the 3-4, the better for us.

One of the strengths of the alignment is that its far easier to find smallish DE's in college - like Ware - who are superior pass rushers but perhaps not big enough to be a straight up 4-3 DE in the NFL, then it is to find legitmate 4-3 pash rushing ends like Peppers. If they are athletic enough, they make great 3-4 LBs. Guys like McGinnest and Bruschi on the Pats are prime examples.

The less other teams competing for these "tweeners", the more and better options we have to pick from.

Not to mention the less the other teams see the 3-4, that is also to our advantage.

Ironically I think if we ran the ball better, we would be more balanced. This year we wasted so many downs on negative or small yard running plays, but we had to keep pounding it to try to get the run established to make the play action effective. Our line wasn't good enough to simply take an aerial approach to the game if the run wasn't working.

I agree 100% that a more balanced attack is more preferrable. But we need that O-line fixed first and foremost or it won't really matter.

I just keep coming back to Kirk Ferentz. I know that it doesn't look like he's interested in leaving Iowa and in truth, that may very well be the case. Still, even this year, it was odd that he suggests he might be open to it but then reverses field and draws his name from consideration. Almost as if he was looking for a certain opportunity and when it didn't materialize, he was happy to stay where he was at. Complete speculation on my part but I thought it was interesting that his seeming interest and disinterest kinda coincided with speculation that BP may not come back and then the subsiquent announcement that he was extended. Probably just fantasy but I found it mildly interesting.

People may not want to hear it, but I think Zimmer is going to get a real shot at this job.
