I understand the philosophy of building through the draft and finding bargains. However I think Stephen is a tad misunderstanding the reason why only one team can do this year in and out. New England and because of Belechik. Jerry has not signed a worthy big impact FA since T.O. and tht turned out pretty good. The Mavericks penny pinch now also and look at what happens when you blow up a championship squad. They are bottom feeders for years again. Jerry also opened his big mouth and now free agents will also avoid because of that.We were 13-3. All we needed was a couple nice upgrades on defense and keep the team together mostly. You dont let Leary go,nor Church, nor Claiborne. Now we are headed for the cellar with a bunch of rookies on defense and scrub vets minus Sean lee.

Jerry (and Cuban) are not short on funds. But they have a salary cap, and you're punished for making bad decisions. Twenty five percent of the Cowboys cap is tied up in 3 players: Dez, Tyrone Crawford, and Witten.

Do those look like wise decisions now?

exactly

Pretty sad there is so much ambiguity that we have to try to sift through what moves are "Power Jerry" and "Stephen".

Sighhhhhh........been saying it all season! The culprit in this mess is Stephen. It's his "genius" restructuring that has put us in this mess and he's gone cheap because we can't afford anything now!

Plus another 15-20 million in dead cap money on guys not on the team, I'm sure.

Romo, Thornton, Carroll. Probably still have Carr and Free on the books. Paea, I imagine, too.

when Stephen took over as gm in training
remember that part in godfather 2

something like that
but Stephen is Michael
hes the new godfather

I don’t think it’s him being tight. I think it’s more a case of the front office not being mentally flexible. I mean everyone agrees that building through the draft is the right way to go about it. Everyone also agrees that playing at the top of the free agent market for guys like Suh usually isn’t good value. However, when you see someone like TJ Ward available in free agency to replace Jeff Heath, you have to be willing to deviate a little from your philosophy especially considering you’re coming off a 13-3 season and you window is now while you have Dak on that 4th rounder deal.

When he didn't want to pay Emmitt Smith ... the best player he's ever had

I actually think it goes back to when Bill Parcells signed all those guys and none of the were worth the money:

33 yr old 'Broke back Rivera' - 8 mill up front
Ant Henry - 12 mill up front
The Model - 5 mill up front
The DT from the Jets - 8 mill up front
The guard was the only one that worked out

I believe that was the start of it. Risen Starr loved all those signings by Parcells .. because they were made by Parcells. #blindworship

We don't need Top A free agents, just C+ level. A new 1-Tech and a LB would solidify this defense tremendously...

You have to build through both draft AND free agency.

No you build through the draft and you use free agency to supplement it. The better run franchises in the league rarely use free agency. The Patriots, Steelers and Packers have rosters made up of primarily draft picks. The vast majority of free agents never come close to living up to their contract so you’re better off investing in your own guys if you draft well...which we do.

The purpose of this thread is silly...Bowman not signing Here had zero to do with money and had everything to do with his family and not having to get up and move in a weeks notice.

It’s more than just being tight
Most big time free agents never play up to their contract. And there is the cap and a very expensive oline to pay
