Some say it was when Jimmy left. Yet, they were in the NFCCG & won the SB in 94 and 95 respectively. Was it the Carolina playoff loss in 96?

Just curious what y'all think.

From my recollection, I would have to say a couple of things:
  • Erik Williams crash
  • Michael Irvin legal problems
It was headed that way anyway with the departure of Jimmy, but I felt we could have squeezed out 1 to 2 more super bowl wins at the very least appearances.

I remember Irvin talking about the loss to Carolina and he said they were tired of winning. Tired because when you go to the Super Bowl that is almost a 6 month grind. He said the team was just tired.

1997, when we went 6-10 and Switzer got the axe. We were competitive again in 1998 and 1999, but those were not quite the same teams as the dynasty years. We were trying to run Chan Gailey's gimmick offense with the Triplets and it all looked rather forced. Troy complained to Jerry, Gailey got fired, Troy got injured the next year and Emmitt was the only Triplet left as Jerry milked his quest for the rushing tile as a marketing tool for the next three years.

When Michael got hurt

I remember Aikman being so excited about the start to that season. Saying it’s been a long time that they got off to a start like that. First game of the season was one of my greatest Cowboy memories! Would have been nice to see if Irvin was healthy all season, how much different would the season have gone!

Troy Aikman has said on the record that the Switzer teams were trash compared to the Johnson teams and they were still successful. It's just that Jimmy built a team capable for winning for years and years and Switzer still was able to benefit and ride the coattails from it.

I'm torn between answering Jimmy's departure/Jerry losing his mind and trying to win "his way." Which I never understood, because he was still winning...

“This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang with with a whimper.”

I think this old quote summarizes the decline. The team kept declining once Jimmy left. Though they won a Super Bowl and were a top team for a few years there-after, they weren’t the same wrecking ball.

-the work culture sagged
-the players faded with age
-stupid trades and poor signings emerged
-free agency losses were a continual bloodletting
-salary cap became a dungeon
