Also seen that the position Kearse plays, though he is a SS, and can be put in a hybrid LB role, I seen it called FLEX....another stupid name.

I know things change and how the game is played. So what should the call a RB / WR hybrid?

When did the position of Defensive End get changed to "Edge Rusher"? Who is responsible for that? I hate it......:D
The passing game created it. The last decade teams are loading up with pass rushers to try and stop these QBs. These days it’s all about creating pressure and the ones on the edge create the most.

Theres a whole lot of positions on the football field that have many names and sometimes names get changed....

I mean you have the Joker Position, HBack, SlotBack, Edge rusher (just a defensive end) Rovers (popular in college, only used in the NFL by name by certain teams) and some Rovers their only job is to force plays inside it wouldnt matter if the tackle moved them clear off the field aslong as its sideways

but speaking of edge rusher it used to be one of them was the primary pass rusher and the other one was the primary run stopper

Because DEs and certain OLBs are interchangeable in today's defenses.

Isaiah Foskey is stand up, type pass rushing OLB edge guy. He's not like a pure hand in the ground all the time DE. But they can often play similar roles.

I don't know that there was a need to call it edge rusher. DE was perfectly fine. We know you're on the outside. It just seems redundant to me.

Because Edge rushers get paid the big bucks while DE don't. Being a QB driven league guys who can really get after the QB are at a premium and so the term edge rusher started being used for those guys really gifted at rushing.

Probably because a 3-4 ROLB is a pass rusher more than a linebacker (unless in a LeBeau disciple defense).

Nowadays, there are so many 3-4 hybrids that it makes more sense to classify in this way when handing out accolades.

I hate it too just like the new numbering system, but things change... a blitz, as it is called today, is actually a dog most of the time by original definitions

The whole league is changing and it’s more about matchups then anything.

A lot of people still think defense wins championships and a ton of other old school non-sense that doesn’t apply to todays game and rules.

The Chiefs are literally doing ring around the rosey pre-snap and a lot of Cowboys fans still thought Zeke was better than Pollard cause of tough yards or something in a big play league.

It's been in the making for sometime.

Rather than say 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, which is essentially the same position, they say Edge.

4-3 LB or 3-4 ILB are all just Linebackers (A to C gap Backers).

Rathern than say 4-3 DT, 3-4 DE, and 3-4 NT, they say Interior DL. That is a bit broader since it's 1 Tech's to 5 Tech's, but for overall ranking these players, this is a way vetter system for personnel departments, both for pro's and college scouting.

I started seeing the term during the 2021 offseason - but it may have appeared earlier than that.
Hadn't found out who coined the position name "Edge" so far....but will keep researching.
