I could be wrong, but I heard there was a push to extend to 12:01 am Saturday morning.

That is when teams need to be under the cap and Free Agency begins. Players that are released can be signed immediatly.

but espn says:

Scheduled to start at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, free agency was pushed back a day upon acceptance of the union proposal. Because of the complications of the deal, Upshaw is expected to agree to push it back again until 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
