When is Romo's contract up?

If they truly believe he had "it" as the article claims, and it was the only way to keep him from leaving via FAgency; Yeah they would. A franchise tag is only for one year basis anyway and they would be doing it to keep him to start in 2007, Bledsoe would be done. Franchise tags/or transitional ones don't keep you from negotiating a contract either, but it does keep you from losing the guy.

I repeat no matter what they think of Romo there is 0% chance they give him a 10 million dollar franchise tag absolutely none

watch, Romo will be extended again

and remember, Bledsoe's deal can be voided after this season

will be VERRRRY interesting to see what we do at QB after '06

I'm with you - Dallas is not Franchising Romo.

Somewhere Miki is perplexed.

I predict Romo and Bledsoe get extended.

I think he needs to be resigned because there is growing opinion in Valley Ranch that Romo is the future and he wont stay with us once he gets to FA because he has only played 2 downs. He has it and I think he will be the next Brett Favre. I hope we don't trade him to the Saints.
I have no desire to resign Romo for anything more than backup money. If he can get starter money somewhere, let him go. Don't pay him starter's money unless you're going to make him your starter. This team has more serious needs than spending unnecessary money on a backup QB with no real NFL experience.

He has just one year on his contract left. If they really think that highly of him they will just use a transition or franchise tag on him to keep him from leaving. They could probably get him to resign with assurances he would be the starter going into 2007. Just doubt he is all that.

The problem with the transition and franchise tag is we would end up paying Romo about $10M/year. This for a guy who went undrafted and may have never thrown a pass in a regular season game. That would be utter stupidity. If the Cowboys think that highly of him, they should just name him the starter next year when he beats out Bledsoe - because if he were that good he would smoke Bledsoe.

Personally, I think Romo is a career backup that I would be happy to ditch for a first day draft pick to the highest bidder. However, I'd love to be wrong.

Agree, on first statements. No way they would give Romo that much money, without having won a single game in NFL. But you know on the second hand, they probably have better knowledge than drafting a 1st rounder or as much knowledge.

Now, Romo being a career backup or not, I don't know, my feeling is, Romo is too much of gambler. Now if you have a great arm to go with that, then maybe you get away with some of it. Romo at best has a Average Arm strength, enough to be effective QB in NFL. So, I think he can be pretty decent Starting NFL QB, from the limited snaps we have seen him take.

So, I do hope, if they think that highly of him, and he shows he is as good as Bledsoe this TC and pre-season games, they go with him rather than Bledsoe. But we all know thats all a pipe dream, cause BP is not going to do that. So I don't know how they will convince him to resign, unless Bledsoe retires after this season.

I agree - if I were Romo and went through another year on the bench and someone were willing to give me a starting job, I would jump at the chance because BP will never go with an unproven QB unless he is forced to do so. Unluckily for Romo, Bledsoe is almost indestructible - his only weak spot is his lungs.

Romo = Career backup.

No way we franchise this guy. I say get what we can out of the Saints.

yeah because we know undrafted guys never mount to anything.

What the H does that mean?

What gave Brady his chance was Bledsoe's lung collapsing after a particularly vicious hit back in the 2001 season, if I recall correctly.

I do believe this is the only time he has ever been knocked out of a game.

Well if you notice, Eli Mannning seems to be league leader in Passer rating in pre-season, we all know how he ended up at the end of season.

With his team in the playoffs, the same amount of TDs as Bledsoe, and less turnovers? True, he blew it in the first round, but he did get there in his second season. This was Bledsoe's thirteenth year in the league.

I'm not defending Eli so much as questioning how so many praise Bledsoe on one hand, and crucify Manning on the other, when they put up similar numbers for the season.

I don't think we will franchise Romo either...10 million is a lot of green. Can we put the RFA on him ? Wouldn't that give us a 1st round pick if he is taken by another team. Not sure if he is eligible for the RFA though...
