The defeat that got the ball rolling for Bright to sell the team was the collapse of the S&L banks. He was one of the largest owners of S&L banks in the 1980's, and saw his personal net worth reduced by 50% with the crash. He needed the money, so he looked to sell the team.

If the sale of the team was simply because of Brights financial situation from the bank collapse he would have never demanded Landry be fired. Brights desire to fire Landry was due to not being able to market a losing team and it was the primary reason he sold the Cowboys. Landry wasn't getting it done anymore and Schramm wasn't about to fire him so Bright decided to sell. When Bright bought the team in 84 he did so with 11 limited partners so he wasn't in it alone. The Cowboys were still a successful team in 84 when Bright took over ownership I'm sure he never imagined the team would sink to the level of futility it did after being successful for so long. Once the Cowboys hit rock bottom he sold the team. You haven't posted one article that backs you up.

Hmm, I guess I didn't remember that aspect. It makes sense though - that seems the way Bright would do it. I am problably mistaking with the fact that it was originally kept quiet when Jerry bought the team and it came out when Jerry drenkenly spilled the beans to a reporter while eating dinner with Jimmy.

Jerry actually found out about the team being for sale by reading the paper while in Mexico.
