First and 10

A look at what has happened to the Browns’ first 10 first-round draft picks of the expansion era:

1999 QB Tim Couch. Released after 2003 season.
2000 DE Courtney Brown. Traded to Denver after 2003 season.
2001 DT Gerard Warren. Traded to Denver after 2004 season.
2002 RB William Green. Released in 2004.
2003 C Jeff Faine. Traded to New Orleans after 2005 season.
2004 TE Kellen Winslow Jr. Traded to Tampa Bay after 2008 season.
2005 WR Braylon Edwards. Traded to New York Jets in 2009.
2006 LB Kamerion Wimbley. Traded to Oakland on Sunday.
2007 OT Joe Thomas. Three-time Pro Bowler signed through 2011.
2008 QB Brady Quinn. Traded to Denver on Sunday.

Here today ... and gone

The Browns have designated the following as their No. 1 quarterbacks going into these seasons:

As a comparison...

1999 - DE Ebenezer Ekuban (played 5 years for Dallas, traded to Cleveland 2004 )
2002 - S Roy Williams ( 5 Pro Bowls, 1 All-Pro, 7 years in Dallas )
2003 - CB Terence Newman ( 2 Pro Bowls, 7 years in Dallas )
2005 - Demarcus Ware ( 4 Pro Bowls, 4 All-Pros, future HOFer )
2006 - Bobby Carpenter
2007 - Anthony Spencer
2008 - Felix Jones
2008 - Mike Jenkins ( 1 Pro Bowl )

Since '99, two of our eight first round picks are no longer on the team. Combined, they have 12 Pro Bowls and 5 All-Pro selections. Newman is a top 15 CB. Ware is one of the top 3 defenders in the league. Spencer is an above average player who really turned the corner. Felix is a HR threat every time he touches the ball. Jenkins is in his second year and is also a top 15 CB.

Jerry takes a lot of flak, but the difference between a well run organization and one that is poorly run is night-and-day.

True, but I don't see any first round picks spent in that group. The Browns have drafted two quarterbacks in the first round including Tim Couch first overall.
The Boys may have not had a wealth of blue chip QB's, but than again they have been bargain hunting for the most part.

I would not include Brooks Bollinger on that list. He never made a start for us and only played the second half of the Giants game in 2008.

And it could be worse for all of us, including the Browns. We could all be Lions fans.

I'd rank them like this based on where they were picked in Rd 1 and how I think history will look a them someday based on value:
Ware
Jenkins
Newman
Williams
F Jones
Spencer
Ekuban
Carpenter

I've seen worse. Most of those guys were not total busts and some were very good picks.

Look at the Raiders picks over the last ten years.

Or the Lions. Now the Lions seem to have gotten better since they got rid of Millen.

While that's not a great list. Those guys weren't all week 1 projected starters, or even guys that the team even hoped would turn into long term starters. Stoerner, Bollinger, Wright all played some, but I don't remember anyone official who ever thought they were a starter. Henson was just a project that never turned out. Dallas never dedicated a season to the idea of him being the qb.

Uh...yes they were. Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, and Drew Henson were all projected to one day be long-time starters for Dallas. Especially Drew Henson.

That would probably be a better option. I was thinking of just burning the whole damn thing down.
