WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWBOYS GONE?
Aug 23, 2007 | 3:05PM

Where is my John Wayne
Where is my prairie song
Where is my happy ending
Where have all the cowboys gone

"Where have all the cowboys gone?", by artist Paula Cole.

Everytime I time I turn around there is another screaming headline about a team or player that makes me want to hurl. Can't these idiots just play the dang game? Shut up, sit down and stay out of trouble or go fishing. But please, spare me the intimate details of all of your personal screw-ups. It's hard enough to find ANY sportsman that I can look up to with admiration anymore.

Where have all the cowboys gone?

Jerome Bettis just recently disclosed that he faked a knee injury in camp so the Steelers wouldn't cut him and replace him with Richard Huntley . Well that's a liitle disconcerting, isn't it? Apparently, "the Bus" had a knee injury prior to camp, but he feared getting cut so he pretended to get hurt in camp so the coaches would have to keep him.

There's a word for that Jerome; FRAUD.

Isn't that the same thing as driving without auto insurance, rolling your car during bad weather and then not reporting it until after you get the insurance to cover the damages? Classy move there, Jerome.

Not only does Jerome disclose his devious disception to the press, but he writes a book about it, "The Bus: My Life in and Out of a Helmet." Am I supposed to go buy this book and read up on how he screwed someone else because of his acting ability? Or am I supposed to pat him on the back because he went on to rush for more than 1300 yards and negotiate a 30 million deal? Either way, he's no hero. He cheated, like so many other players.

Why did he have to tell us? I didn't want to know about this. I was happy with my memories of him before he opened his big mouth. The only reason why he told us was to publicize his book. He makes a ton of money and our memories of him are now tainted. Nice.

This whole story makes me wonder if all the other injured players are really hurt. The Lakers' Luke Walton and his never healing sprained ankle really bothers me. I had a plate and six screws put in a broken fibula and healed faster than him. Was that a legit injury, or was he hoping Britney Spears would finally give in to his infatuations with her and play nursemaid to him?

We also have R.L. White, the head of the NCAAP's Atlanta Chapter, who said Michael Vick should be given a second chance when he gets out of prison. First of all, why the initials in your name Mr. White? Are you scared of some backlash and don't want your full name given to the press?

Let's make something perfectly clear...Micheal Vick will never play in the NFL again, but the CFL looks promising. Vick needs another new alias, maybe Ron Canada, and then he can resume his sub-par performances for our neighbors to the North. They'll soon be screaming for Flutie again, but at least Mikey has a quality American friend in Ricky Williams, now doesn't he? *exhale*

As far as second chances, hasn't he been given a few of those already in his lifetime? Just how many mulligans does he get? The water bottle incident should have been a heads-up, but he ignored it. The Ron Mexico scandal was a public relations nightmare, and flipping the dirty bird to the fans showed the amount of class he has. Three strikes, you are out Michael, eh?

Speaking of strike-outs, I guess there weren't that many of them if you were a Texas Ranger batter facing the stellar pitching of the Orioles, recently, huh "Oh" fans?

How does a team, a PROFESSIONAL baseball team, give up 30 consecutive runs to the last place Rangers? When I saw the Texas-Baltimore score, I thought it was a preseason NFL game final. This is a joke. Even Little Leaguers don't give up that many runs.

And since we are talking about about kids...

Two pretty boy/poster boy quarterbacks in the NFL (Matt Leinart and more recently, Tom Brady) are the proud (?) fathers of two baby boys who will get to "visit" their dads occasionally. How heartwarming. BOTH of them dumped their girlfriends while they were either pregnant, or in the process of getting pregnant.

Just so I have this straight, it's considered heroic to stand up for your team mates and "have their back" when they get in trouble, like a Michael Vick or PacMan Jones, but knock up your girlfriend and it's time to bail? These players are so jaded, they think forking over 25k a month in child support is being a dad.

Is it me, or does it seem that the higher the salary of the athlete, the higher the chances of him making a complete BLEEP out of himself? The sad part of this is that I could probably name 50 athletes on this page who have done really moronic and/or criminal things while being "professionals." But we are all getting desensitized from these antics, and so we shrug our shoulders and buy our tickets to support "our team." And their brain-dead players.

Have I missed anything here?

Can we now all agree that the term "professional athlete" is an oxymoron?

couple things,
woudl it be better for a couple to stay togehter for a child regardless of the emotional attachment either parent would have to each other?

if jerome produced like he should have produced what difference does it make if he faked a leg injury, he still delivered exactly what the team paid for when it mattered.

What a dumb song that was, the lyrics were okay but the melody was awful.

In both cases.... I dont think its a big deal.

The NFL will drop you like a hot potato and throw your contract out the window.

Insurance companies dont always pay out.

To me... like I said... no biggie.

The real victim of the Vick scandal is the NAACP. I remember a time when that venerable and courageous organization stood for something, like giving ordinary blacks a chance to excell. When it manned the barricades against Jim Crow and the ugly legacy of slavery and real bias.
I hope that this is just a renegade chapter and that the national office will fire a memo to R.L. to shut up.
NAACP should not associate itself with the uglier aspects of humankind, like Vick.
And thanks to the NAACP for all it has done for our country and the economic and political freeing of many Americans.
But, again, be careful of your associations. There are many more people out there much more deserving of your representation.

Now that was a good song.

Or perhaps you need to try a different aftershave.

Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? Lyrics
Artist(Band):paula Cole

Oh you get me ready in your 56 chevy
Why don't we go sit down in the shade
Take shelter on my front porch
The dandy lion sun scorching,
Like a glass of cold lemonade
I will do laundry if you pay all the bills

CHORUS:

Where is my John Wayne
Where is my prairie song
Where is my happy ending
Where have all the cowboys gone

Why don't you stay the evening
Kick back and watch the TV
And I'll fix a little something to eat
Oh I know your back hurts from working on the tractor
How do you take your coffee my sweet
I will raise the children if you pay all the bills

Chorus

I am wearing my new dress tonight
But you don't, but you don't even notice me
Say our goodbyes
Say our goodbyes
Say our goodbyes

We finally sold the chevy
When we had another baby
And you took the job in tennessee
You made friends at the farm
And you joined them at the bar
Almost every single day of the week
I will wash the dishes while you go have a beer

Chorus

Where is my Marlboro man
Where is his shiny gun
Where is my lonely ranger
Where have all the cowboys gone
Where have all the cowboys gone
Where have all the cowboys gone

Yippee aw, yippee yea (6 times)

It isn't the same as an insurance case as most insurance contracts only start the minute you enter into them, they aren't back dated.

Poor analogy.

Hos,

I completely respect you and truly believe that you are a man of high moral character, it's obvious in your ideas, thoughts, and how you treat others here. I think that we have a lot of the same concepts of right and wrong, of good and evil. You're just a good guy, plain and simple, it's obvious. :)

So while I agree with a lot of what you said here concerning each of these particular cases, I still think that there is also a whole lot of good that professional athletes do as well. It just doesn't get nearly the same media coverage. The way I look at it, any profession has their fair share of crooks, liars, cheaters, felons, and bad guys. But because they are under the microscope, we hear about all the athletes that do this junk. You don't hear about all the plumbers, dentists, or grocery store workers doing it. And unfortunately, a few Michael Vicks give a black eye to the rest of the professional athletes. For every Michael Vick, there is a Warrick Dunn, an Emmitt Smith, a David Robinson, guys that are true models.

It wasn't written by Hos. There's a link at the top. But you're right. The good stories don't get enough press.

This song should have been titled, "Where have all the Roger Staubachs gone?"

I couldn't think of a more fitting person when it comes to leading by example on the field as well as in the real world than my personal hero, Captain Comeback. The guy was simply in a class by himself.
