WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWBOYS GONE?
Aug 23, 2007 | 3:05PM
Where is my John Wayne
Where is my prairie song
Where is my happy ending
Where have all the cowboys gone
"Where have all the cowboys gone?", by artist Paula Cole.
Everytime I time I turn around there is another screaming headline about a team or player that makes me want to hurl. Can't these idiots just play the dang game? Shut up, sit down and stay out of trouble or go fishing. But please, spare me the intimate details of all of your personal screw-ups. It's hard enough to find ANY sportsman that I can look up to with admiration anymore.
Where have all the cowboys gone?
Jerome Bettis just recently disclosed that he faked a knee injury in camp so the Steelers wouldn't cut him and replace him with Richard Huntley . Well that's a liitle disconcerting, isn't it? Apparently, "the Bus" had a knee injury prior to camp, but he feared getting cut so he pretended to get hurt in camp so the coaches would have to keep him.
There's a word for that Jerome; FRAUD.
Isn't that the same thing as driving without auto insurance, rolling your car during bad weather and then not reporting it until after you get the insurance to cover the damages? Classy move there, Jerome.
Not only does Jerome disclose his devious disception to the press, but he writes a book about it, "The Bus: My Life in and Out of a Helmet." Am I supposed to go buy this book and read up on how he screwed someone else because of his acting ability? Or am I supposed to pat him on the back because he went on to rush for more than 1300 yards and negotiate a 30 million deal? Either way, he's no hero. He cheated, like so many other players.
Why did he have to tell us? I didn't want to know about this. I was happy with my memories of him before he opened his big mouth. The only reason why he told us was to publicize his book. He makes a ton of money and our memories of him are now tainted. Nice.
This whole story makes me wonder if all the other injured players are really hurt. The Lakers' Luke Walton and his never healing sprained ankle really bothers me. I had a plate and six screws put in a broken fibula and healed faster than him. Was that a legit injury, or was he hoping Britney Spears would finally give in to his infatuations with her and play nursemaid to him?
We also have R.L. White, the head of the NCAAP's Atlanta Chapter, who said Michael Vick should be given a second chance when he gets out of prison. First of all, why the initials in your name Mr. White? Are you scared of some backlash and don't want your full name given to the press?
Let's make something perfectly clear...Micheal Vick will never play in the NFL again, but the CFL looks promising. Vick needs another new alias, maybe Ron Canada, and then he can resume his sub-par performances for our neighbors to the North. They'll soon be screaming for Flutie again, but at least Mikey has a quality American friend in Ricky Williams, now doesn't he? *exhale*
As far as second chances, hasn't he been given a few of those already in his lifetime? Just how many mulligans does he get? The water bottle incident should have been a heads-up, but he ignored it. The Ron Mexico scandal was a public relations nightmare, and flipping the dirty bird to the fans showed the amount of class he has. Three strikes, you are out Michael, eh?
Speaking of strike-outs, I guess there weren't that many of them if you were a Texas Ranger batter facing the stellar pitching of the Orioles, recently, huh "Oh" fans?
How does a team, a PROFESSIONAL baseball team, give up 30 consecutive runs to the last place Rangers? When I saw the Texas-Baltimore score, I thought it was a preseason NFL game final. This is a joke. Even Little Leaguers don't give up that many runs.
And since we are talking about about kids...
Two pretty boy/poster boy quarterbacks in the NFL (Matt Leinart and more recently, Tom Brady) are the proud (?) fathers of two baby boys who will get to "visit" their dads occasionally. How heartwarming. BOTH of them dumped their girlfriends while they were either pregnant, or in the process of getting pregnant.
Just so I have this straight, it's considered heroic to stand up for your team mates and "have their back" when they get in trouble, like a Michael Vick or PacMan Jones, but knock up your girlfriend and it's time to bail? These players are so jaded, they think forking over 25k a month in child support is being a dad.
Is it me, or does it seem that the higher the salary of the athlete, the higher the chances of him making a complete BLEEP out of himself? The sad part of this is that I could probably name 50 athletes on this page who have done really moronic and/or criminal things while being "professionals." But we are all getting desensitized from these antics, and so we shrug our shoulders and buy our tickets to support "our team." And their brain-dead players.
Have I missed anything here?
Can we now all agree that the term "professional athlete" is an oxymoron?
