Where is the civility?

A forum member writes about comparing two defensive players, one from San Diego, one from the Cowboys.

As far as post go, I thought it was straightforward and food for thought.

Then another member responds to that post about putting up with "these stupid and senseless comparisons."

You'd think that we'd be mature enough to handle our base insticts and ignore the post or, if you gotta respond, at least respond in a civil way.

Calling someone else's comparisons "stupid" and "senseless" should not be business as usual. Where is the civility, moderators?

I've noticed it, seems like every post has lately has somebody come in and type something along the lines of "This post is stupid and you're stupid for posting it". If you don't care about the subject matter of a post then you shouldn't post... that simple.

I think it's all about getting that +1 to the post count and trying to look smart by bashing somebody else.

In the absense of a no Ware/Merriman comparison ban, maybe those people simply should not respond to threads they deem to be stupid or senseless. . . .

Naw, then they could not get their digs in. Well, too bad.

So we get a thread to call attenion to posts in another thread?

The words stupid and senseless come to mind :)

Why wasn't the offending post reported? If we don't see it we can't do anything about it.

From my perspective I think if someone wants to start a thread about Merriman, they should do it in the NFL zone.

As he is not a Dallas Cowboy.

Furthermore when someone feels the need to make sure there are multiple Merriman threads a week they also forget that putting up the same Merriman threads all the time it is pushing OTHER good threads off the main page.

Not only that, but then they have to make yet another thread complaining about someone who does not want to read yet another Merriman thread.

Civility is a two way street, one does not make the other right.

So how about for future sakes if someone wants to bring up Merriman, do it in the NFL zone.

Again, responding to what you perceive as stupid and senseless does not exactly make you . . . well, thanks for taking part.:)

There is no rule against attacking post only for attacking posters. ;)

I can't respond to this.

I won't be civil.

Good points, brain. I am kind of new to this Zone and don't always recognize the regulars from others.

But whether one is a Dallas fan or not should not be the litmus test for getting civil responses.

But I get your drift and when these multiple/redundant threads push other legitimate threads further down, that's not good either.

Maybe a good way to ease the number of those redundant threads is to not answer posts we, individually, presume to be um, not well thought out.

God bless us every one. And Merry Christmas.

And there lies the problem.
If only Forum members could be more discerning and not make their perceived pithy little statements to posts and threads they did not like.

Oh, well.

I was also joking. Hence the winking emoticon. There is a long standing joke about me living up to my username and being "abrasive."

People respond to two types of posts...

1. Stuff that greatly interests them.

2. Stuff that is a pet peeve.

The Ware vs. Merriman stuff is one that for some will fall into the "pet peeve" type of response. In your 50,000 watt tower are people normally civil when telling you about their dislike for the sound of nails on a blackboard?

If so, then you live in Xanadu. Feel blessed and don't worry about those outside the walls.

Oh, well.

that's not the kind of world we live in, however.

i hope i've cleared up *why* i posted that and in this instance, yes i was wrong and quick to "judge" so to speak. but i've waded through senseless argument after senseless argument on the topic and 99 out of 100 of them are troll driven. no, that doesn't mean i should respond to that either, but you also have to realize on the other side of the screen the world may be very different and the poster may already be in a bad mood looking for a release.

guilty, and i've said so.

however, i still never want to see another thread comparing the two again and am likely to have the same response when someone comes along and "feels that need".

they could be new to the board, they could be a lot of things - but in this community it's been beat to death to where the horses bones are pure ash and don't even stir up a cloud of dust anymore when flogged.

"civility" is also basically harder the larger a group gets. i love this forum and it's my "big daddy" that i post in, and the only "bid daddy" that i post in. sometimes spookie dookie gets out but he usually goes away quickly. (private joke). i also run a very small forum where we know everyone and civility is a LOT easier to come by - but only because of the small numbers which will reflect a smaller slice of posts across the board.

the annoying ones you see in here i seldom see in the other one, but when you do, you know the poster as a friend already and you blow up a little less and understand a bit more. if that site ever got "this" big, it would be a pain to moderate, which is why i appreciate the job these mods try to do.

i'd not do everything the same way, but that's not the point.

but with the cowboys winning, i do see more civility than when we were not and we were flooded with drewpies all the time.
