Where is the media's courage?

As someone said, Dale Hansen has absolutely hammered Jerry on his GMing. He's even done it to his face on live TV.

But Jerry doesn't care. If anything, it only seems to strengthen his resolve.

When it comes to Jerry Jones? Why, even when they try to question him about "meddling" do they do it as if they are his drinking buddies? There is usually laughter and cutting up, and all the rest. Why doesn't someone, in a very serious tone, ask him the tough questions that a lot of the fans of this team want delivered to him?

I really believe that a majority of fans (not discounting the many on this board that disagree with me, I'm not oblivious to that), wish that Jerry would stop the kind of nonsense we have seen the last two weeks. First he questions his head coach openly in the lockeroom, and then makes the idiotic statement today about basically "giving permission" for Murray to break a record.

The media tries to act so bold on other occasions, where is the serious minded boldness needed to ask this man those questions?

You can criticize Dale Hanson for a lot of things, and I would agree with you about many of them, but at least it seemed to me that he never kissed Jerry's ring.

Ever since Jerra bought the team, Jerra has been "meddling." Don't you think the media has axed him enough over the years. They (the media) are tired and probably think it best to focus on other things. Axing jerra to stop meddling is like axing a drunk to stop drinkin.

Ax him about the laziest, least talented and uncooperative sort and jerra and his ilk will answer: He's working hard to improve his game. He's intelligent and going at it hard in the weight room and working with trainers."

Yep, the tough questions like the types of questions that Polian gets or Parcells use to get.

Like it or not, Jerry is also the GM. Consequently, he can't really be described as meddling if he's simply carrying out the functions that GM typically carry out.

Rather than calling him a "meddling owner," perhaps we should use a label closer to the truth:

A mediocre GM.

I'm not talking about the value of the franchise. In that respect, Jerry has performed very well. I'm referring to the on-field product over the past decade or so -- which is the crux of this thread.

In that regard, I have no inhibitions against describing Jerry as a mediocre GM.

He has three rings over the course of his ownership. Far above average in the NFL.

True that we have been average, or less than average over the course of the past 17 seasons, but we do have a team on the rise and over the past 6 or seven seasons, we have been above average IMO, better than mediocre but not great either.

We have been division champs twice in the last 5 season, won a playoff game, and been in the playoffs 3 times, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Admittedly, for us, that is less than meeting expectations. We count Conference Championships as lost seasons, less than winning it all counts as losing. I get that.

Perhaps that whole losing thing is about to change. I can be critical of JJ in many instances, but I find it hard to be too tough on him if I view things in context of what so many other teams fans have had to endure.

Jerry certainly deserves credit for the Cowboys success in the 90s. I've never sought to deny or downplay his role in that. However, I thoroughly reject the philosophy of "once a good GM, always a good GM" or "once a bad GM, always a bad GM."

The NFL is not a static entity. It changes over time, and its members must adapt if they want to remain competitive.

Case in point: How would you rate Al Davis as a GM over the past few years? In your opinion, would the Raiders have been better off with or without him over that time? Prior to his death, Al Davis was mocked frequently and harshly on this board; however, as a GM, he has a pair of Super Bowl victories to his credit and his team's most recent Super Bowl appearance was 2003 -- seven years after Jerry's most recent.

Now, consider an example much closer to home. In the eleven years before Tom Landry was fired, he could a claim a Super Bowl victory, another Super Bowl appearance, and five NFC Championship game appearances to his credit? Did past accolades save Tom Landry's job? What have Jerry's Cowboys accomplished in the past eleven years?

You'll notice that I described Jerry as "mediocre GM" rather than a "poor GM." That's because his process for evaluating talent has improved immensely since 2003. His teams are far more competitive, but the increased competitiveness has not translated into post-season success.

I'm sure Jerry would hedge but it's obvious Jason Garrett does not have the same juice as Bill or Jimmy.

You have things backwards. Dale Hanson is the bigger egomaniac by a long shot. He criticizes Jerry because Jerry doesn't recognize him as anything more than the overblown pompous loudmouth that he is.

We've been thru this countless times. Jerry is the owner and the final decision maker. He's going to tell us that and how as a group they come form opinions and come to a conclusion as to what to do, but he's the final decision maker.

And as fans....we don't seem to mind it too much given our attendance figures, even on the road. Along with our merchandise purchasing, TV ratings, etc.

Just because you can't stand Jerry, doesn't mean the rest of the fans can't stand Jerry. Or at least to the point where it starts to make an impact (attendance drops).

If you want Jerry to change his ways, the only way it's going to happen is if the fans lose a dramatic amount of interest in the team.

Rich, I don't disagree with your observation that the team still sells tickets and merchandise. I totally disagree with the conclusion you draw from it (that Jerry's idiotic ways don't bother the fans). Rather, I see the American public - including Cowboys fans - as hopelessly addicted to the entertainment called the NFL. I think Jerry could slap some of these fans mommas in the face on national TV and they would say "he's the owner and pays the big bucks, momma doesn't have to work there."

I think most folks realize Jerreh is a clown, do we really need to see him spin plates or juggle to verify it? No reason to ask him a question he will clown car you with. Like talking to your crazy uncle, why ask a serious question to someone who'll never give you a rational answer?
