Where was Witten in the game plan?

Just curious what folks think. Now that Payton is calling the offensive plays, the TE' are going to get less balls thrown their way? Or just happened that way and it' only the first game of the year. Payton prefers the West Coast type offense to a point. Any thoughts?

It was reported that Gates was playing witten's role in practice to give them a good feel of how to defend Witten.

I have also read that they made it a priority to take witten out of the game.

So he was an emphasis for their defense and while keeping on Witten it helped open up Keys, Glen and Crayton IMO.

San Diego took him out of the game. Other players had options, ala Crayton as a result. The playcalling was a result of San Diego keying on Witten.

Isn't he in a contract year? .........Agenda ;)

Witten will get his catches. He's more of a threat as a secondary rather than a primary receiver.

Remember Bolts TE Gates played Witten in practice so they could get use to him. Understand Witten in the game had 2-3 guys covering/around him all the time effectively taking him out of the game but making it somewhat easier for our WRs. Don't think Skins will be able to do same as the Bolts so we should see more of Witten.

You are going to have weeks like this where a team game-plans out your best receiver. Isn’t it refreshing, though, to see the other guys step up?

I wasn’t watching Witten closely enough, but if I had to guess, Donnie Edwards was probably assigned to him when they didn’t have a CB on him, along with their FS for insurance. Edwards was all over the field and is one of the best cover LBs in the game.

With our WRs stepping up like they did this week, it will eventually open up the field for Witten. Make no mistake about it – Beldsoe’s favorite target in NE was Coates. It is only a matter of time before history repeats itself … patience.

Drew said that they were doing their best to take away Witten and make them go elsewhere with the ball. He said on one play designed for Witten they had three guys on him.

With the emergence of Crayton and Keyshawn getting back in the mix, teams will have trouble keying on one guy. SD also has some good LB's. I expect Witten's catches to go up if Bledsoe continues to spread the ball around effectively.

It has a lot more to do with the very high quality of play by the SD LB's. They have one of the fastest most athletic MLB's in the league.

I think the Chargers made it a point to try to stop Witten, thinking that would slow our offense down since he is All-pro and everything.

They probably didn't think Crayton would go off.

Trust me, Parcells won't let Witten get less balls.

We just took what they gave us yesterday. Other teams will see that that doesn't work.

Are TEs ever primary receivers?

I would say perhaps that Tony Gonzalez was a primary... Witten became the primary lsat year by default, but now that we have a health (and talented) recieving Corps, I don't think he will get the 88 catches he got last year... BUt Maybe I'll be wrong.

I agree, Witten became our go to guy by default. He'll probably catch about 60 passes for 600 yards and 6-7 TD's

I can't see him catching more than that.

Props to Peyton for not trying to force the ball to Witten -- gotta take what the D gives you -- and they gave us a lot of open looks to Crayton. Witten's contract year is meaningless -- Jerry always does right by guys - if he knows that teams gameplan specifically to take Witten out then he is worth a huge contract.

If the OL can really get Julius going, forceing 8 into the box to stop the run,.......thats when Witten will go off.........the play action, delayed draw will all force the LB or SS covering witten to peek into the backfield 1st

Emmitt was the best thing that ever happened to Jay Novacek, along with the threat of Irvin outside

Yeah, steroids will do that ;)
See Luis Castillo- Roid rage of Bledsoe's head!!!

Witten will get his catches. SD's D isn't bad. This was a playoff team last year and they practice against one of the best TEs in the game every day.
