I'm not particularly fond of drinking protein shakes all day but I'm a big guy weighing around 260 and i need to add whey to my pre and post workout routine to get the extra protein (realistically im not going to eat 8 chicken breasts and 10 eggs a day). I've used numerous brands over the years and was wondering about any personal experiences (not just opinions) as i know some of you guys have alot of knowledge in this area. the supplement industry is largely unregulated and the more you research the more you find contradictions and confusion, so the question is: are the more expensive 'micronized' 'pure hydrolyzed isolated' etc. brands ANY better than the $14.99 version at wally world ?

Look at Bodybuilding.com and find one in your price range that is highly rated, there are hundreds in all different price ranges.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/whey.html

is the highest rated and only comes out to 59 cents a serving, they also have smaller sizes.

I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey. It tastes great, and people who know more about it than me recommend it. =) I pay about $40 per 5 gallon tub via Amazon, which I don't consider to be expensive.

I always use it in my post workout shakes, but I frequently drink shakes as meal replacements or supplements to add calories if I'm trying to gain weight as well.

I use Gold Standard. First and foremost because it does what I want. Been using it now for 9 months. Secondly, it mixes well, tastes great and has a good amount of BCAA's and other essential aminos. I stay away from the sugary ones that have a higher caloric intake as well. One important thing to remember is that the body can only process about 50 grams of protien per serving......... The rest is flushed.

In my experience one brand does work better than the other for me. Try the micronized gig and see if that works for you. Start with it.

As far as what wal-mart sells..........you get what you pay for. Go to vitamin cottage or something similar. Ask for some samples.

No.. Protein is protein. The only difference is some will taste better than others. If you can deal with bad taste than just get the stuff at Walmart.

If you got a Sams Club Membership than you can get a 5 lb bag of EAS for 30 bucks. Thats what I use.

If you want something with added nutrients go with the Musclemilk/Monstermilk.

How many grams of protein are you trying to consume a day?

Good grief that is way too much man.

You only need 1 gram of protein for 1-1.5 pounds of lean body mass.

+1 on this. cheap, mixes well, tastes OK (vanilla).
I drink it within an hour after lifting. I also make smoothies with it sometimes (scoop of powder, ice, splash of milk, unsweetened orange juice, strawberries, sometimes banana and/or fruit flavored yogurt)

I've always read/heard that it's 1 to 1. When did it change

By the way, MFWitt63, I prefer Muscle Milk Light....great taste even with ice water, lower cals, decent amount of protein. (25gs in 2 scoops)

Yeah I would need to know you're body fat % too.

Without knowing im guessing you need about 210 a day.

Im 6'4 235 with 20% BF so im just guessing what yours is off mine since we have somewhat similar builds.

Anyways here is a link and if you learn it you'll be on your way.

Just figuring this stuff out is the hard part but once you do it makes dieting and gaining muscle much much easier.

do i have to say Whey gold by O.N. cause i work for them?

Catch is right. Protein is Protein...BUT they are rated on how pure it is on a scale of 0-100% and weither or not its white or off shades of white.

In the ON products we use strickly 90% protein cause thats the highest grade (it goes 90-100, 80-89, 70-79...etc) which in return gives us the highest graded turn outs (protein g's and all that other stuff

Hey thanks for the links man. I'm going to be reading those for when I get back into working out like I should be. I'm 260 as well, 6'1" and I'm looking to eventually lose at least 60-80 pounds and getting into excellent shape for a change. I just have to stop being lazy and actually do the work.
