Which do you prefer first? Draft or Free Agency?

Personally, I have enjoyed the reversal precipitated by the lock-out and CBA process. Draft first, then ‘fill in the holes’ through FA. Seems logical.

Would I want that on a permanent basis, if it were even possible? I think so…

What about you? Why?

Free agency. Only because players are usually ready to come in and contribute right away.

I think you use FA to help fill gaps but you build off the draft. Teams tend to over pay in the FA market looking at some decent players making major dollars? I don't think is a way to go. In my view one of the best FA pickup we have brought in was Kosier, he has been solid and did not cost an arm or leg to get.

I'd prefer the free agency first, that's for filling immediate holes on a team, the draft is for building for the future, but I'd like to see the draft moved up atleast a month, there is far too much noise as I call it when it comes to talking about this player and that player and all these useless mock drafts that come out day in and day out.

If we can build a good team through the past couple drafts, i'm all for it.

is this a serious question? it is obvious that teams that draft well always have the better outcomes

I agree that the Draft should probably be first.

EDIT: lol, a lot of you really need to learn to read before replying. Holy crap. He's not asking which is more important.

Draft.

Free Agency has been like us passing on our pick.

It's been way more fun this year so i wouldn't mind if it stayed like this

The draft. If we could start drafting well we would'nt need free agency.

Build through the draft, use free agency to fill one or two needs for a short time. Building for the long term ensures more playoff appearances and chances to get to a Super Bowl.

I don't know that there is an answer for this. Ideally a team would always like to do so well in the draft that free-agency isn't needed, but that's never going to happen. Even aside from the fact that drafting is never perfect, a team could never structure all contracts where they would never lose guys they drafted down the road. There will always be holes to fill, and if the team is pretty solid and just needs a few strong players in key spots to be highly competative I would rather go with a free agent who is proven rather than run the risk of gambling away the teams chances with an unproven player.

So, bottom line is to build what you can from the draft, but know that key free agents are always going to be necessary.

Still though

Hmmm...not too many people read the original question I see.

I like the idea of free agency being scheduled first on the calendar. Teams can try to fill big needs there first.

Then, you can draft the best player available.

That's my opinion.

Now.....like many others, I PREFER a team to be BUILT through the draft.

But that wasn't really what was asked.

I like having the draft first. It seems to me that you can use the draft to get the BPA at positions of need, and would result in less reaching.

Having free agency after allows you the luxury of knowing that you can plug whatever holes you don't fill in the draft with free agency.

You've got a lot more control over FA signings than you do players available in the draft.

Which I rather first ? Free agency.
Which one better for the league ? Draft.

I would definitely prefer the draft first then have free agency. But this year is an anomaly since it was because of the lockout.

The problem is the players union would never agree having the draft first because it's best for the veteran players to have free agency first. Simple supply and demand economics along with getting the player his money, into his new system and city as soon as possible.
