.The Combine is an annual showcase for NFL draft prospects to strut their stuff in various running, jumping and weight-lifting drills. To figure out which player stood out the most within his position group at each of the various skill tests, we compared the results with the number of standard deviations from the mean. This is basically a statistical way of leveling the playing field among the different sizes and speeds of players.
Lightly regarded before his workout, Mr. Petrus's 45 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press were further ahead of the mean in his field of players than any other player performing any other drill. Although Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson registered only 25 reps on the bench, he was a major standout relative to his position.
Among big-name performers, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow showed great athleticism when he blazed a 6.66-second three-cone drill, a measure of short-area quickness. Mr. Tebow's performance ranked 13th of the 698 results that were evaluated.
So who struggled at the Combine? Alabama's Terrence Cody—nicknamed "Mt. Cody" for his girth—labored through a 5.64-second time in the 40-yard dash, which was fifth-worst in our scale and less than a second faster than that of NFL Network host Rich Eisen, who ran the 40 in a Prada suit.
