Which Receivers Make the 53?

Why is Jamal Brooks always overlooked . He was Rush’s favorite other than 88 . And I think Flournoy with targets can prove his worth . I like both of them . I hope Holden is on the PS as a future contributor. Remember his college coach is the Pokes WR coach .
It was his 2nd season last year and there were plenty of opportunities where he just did not get open.

They only go with five to go longer elsewhere.

Lamb
Pickens
Tolbert
Turpin
Flournoy

There will be three WRs on the practice squad.

The first four are easy: Lamb, Pickens, Tolbert, Turpin.

I think they likely keep six. So, which two on the current roster have a shot to make the initial 53. And why?

Personally, my two guys are Holden and Cropper.

Holden is fast, and plays like an NFL receiver. His top speed is in the 98th percentile. He's that guy who can make plays on slams or down the field. Not the best route runner, but he gets good separation. To me, Holden is just a better football player at this point. Maybe I'm sleeping on Flournoy, but I'm giving Holden the edge over Flournoy because he plays with that so-called dog in him.

Cropper has been my pet cat since before we acquired him. The guy can just play. He's a bit undersized, but his weight and speed helps him get separation, which is a big part of his game.

Im looking for guys who can separate for WRs 5 and 6.

Why?

Because you always play a few teams that have sticky corners and so you need players with a knack for getting open, which both Holden and Cropper do well.

Not only that, I really like what they can both do after the catch.

I also like these two just for the chemistry they bring. As players, they'd give us more flexibility to run more WCO stuff, which I hope is part of the plan.

I'm not worried about draft picks spent on a player if an UDFA is better. Just go with the better player.

Nice post but I have to chime in to the contrary on Holden. I like the guy, and I’ve watched him a ton (I’m a Bama grad, which is where he played prior to hitting the portal). He has to be closer to 2nd percentile speed than 98th. He ran a 4.57. He’s a good contested catch guy and actually does a really good job getting separation out of breaks on intermediate routes (which plays well with your note about him playing like a pro). Given that his game has never been about getting behind the secondary, I’m not worried about the 40 time. What I am worried about is his run after the catch. He does virtually nothing for me in that department and it’s a tough skill for a young wr trying to earn a spot to have a deficiency at. He’s a tough damn WR though and is more than willing both as a blocker and at going over the middle.

That’s just my 2 cents. I hope I’m wrong about the run after the catch bit, that would be an outlook changer for him if you’re right.

I’m hoping it’s Mingo. I love his physical attributes as a receiver. It’s going to be fun to watch the competition in training camp and preseason games.
I'm hoping it's almost anyone but Mingo mostly because almost everyone else separates better than Mingo.

We need less tight window throws. Separation is something fans sorely overlook in Dallas. Same for the front office and staff.

They need to be thinking separation, separation, separation. It would revive the offense and take Dak to another level.

Mingo has a lot of competition. I hope someone steps up and takes a role. Whoever it is, it shouldn't be a gimmie regardless of what they spent.

They clocked him though on GPS. I'm talkng top speed...your eyes were fooling you on his speed. Otherwise, I agree with your assessment. He's faster down field. But adequately fast enough on shorter routes. He uses his body well and isn't afraid of contact, which I like.

Holden's 90.5 IGA score indicates that he performs at a very high percentile compared to his peers and even professionals, further proving his high athletic ceiling. According to Reel Analytics, Holden has a max speed of 22.1 mph, placing him in the 98th percentile

the four you listed plus Mingo, who jerry traded for and will not cut so he doesn't admit he made a mistake
Flourney (stephen loves him).
the rest or PS

Some borderline roster guy is going to take Dak to the next level? Even if he did consistently separate super deep, Dak's not gonna hit him out there anyway, lol.

It was his 2nd season last year and there were plenty of opportunities where he just did not get open.

It was one play but he had a beautiful play against Carolina where Rush actually escaped long enough to hit Brooks streaking across the back of the end zone for a TD .

Flournoy got some targets in preseason against the Raiders. I liked what he did with them. Potential is there. He just plays too stiff for my liking.

Anyway, I'm not bashing Mingo. I just think he's a bad fit for what the offense really needs. They need weapons now that can separate this year. I'm basing this off or what I hope they do because I don't like giving players a free pass.

And again, Dak is always playing with receivers who get marginal separation. Give the guy a bone.

You need separation in the playoffs, not potential. You need teams to respect your pass game so you can run on them. So you need guys who get open.

You may be right because you can include Blue as WR 6 if you need him, although my offense would have him at 3 in the slot.

Think Turpin against Detroit. Shut us down all game. Turp should have been involved sooner.

And, I'm talking about receivers in general. As a group, you need one guy known for just getting open.and making plays.

Lamb does it, but Pickens is more of a contested catch guy. I just think Mingo's route running makes you redundant. But at times he does remind me of prime Noah Brown.

But again, I'm just looking for another element outside of a big, blocking receiver type.

I could see only carrying 5. If the plan is to run the ball like they claim I could see an extra TE

You need to forget about how they are as a receiver and look at special teams. Especially since neither vet RB will play ST and Mingo and Tolbert won't either.

Probably Fluornoy because of his athleticism, but I still like Brooks.

The real shame is that Mingo will force one off just because Jerry spent the fourth and wants to be proven right.

TE would be same as last year Ferguson Schoon and Spann Ford . It’s a deep position I look for Ferguson to rebound
Yeah, they also had Fant on the ps and Stephens Jr a receiver convert that keeps getting hurt.

This year they like Auburn TE Rivaldo Fairweather. He's got good TE size (6-3 242) and looks like a pretty good receiver. Smooth, coordinated runner & can catch 50/50 balls.

Mingo will make it so that really only leaves one other. I want it to be Flournoy but they seem to have some obsession with Brooks.
I think Brooks has just become the latest to hang around because we spent a draft pick on him. Flournoy may be next in that line. We just keep swapping them out. Brown is probably the last one we hit on decently, either him or Cedrick Wilson.

You never know . They spent 250k to get Spann Ford I think he’s got one more year to push for more PT and targets . The other 2 are safe Schoon & Ferguson

Mingo would have to be really bad to get cut. A 4th rnd pick is not a throw away pick. I think he’s safer than Tolbert
I'd agree with that. Tolbert is far enough removed from us spending a fourth on him that he could be a bubble player now. However, I think he stepped up enough last year that we could see him as a viable candidate for No. 3 receiver snaps. It will be interesting to see among him, Turpin and Mingo. I'm not sure whoever the sixth receiver is will even be active for games.
