Which scenario would you chose for Terence Newman?

We all know how expensive elite corners are these days. Terence Newman will be 31 yrs old next year. My question for the board is what do you think we should do? I have a few scenarios to consider:

1) Do we draft 2 corners on the 1st day to cover ourselves in case Newman wants to break the bank?

2)Do we sign him too a contract extension next year and if we do what size contract would you offer?

3)Do we draft 1 corner, sign a FA like Florence and franchise Newman next year and allow him to walk at age 32?

My scenario would be #1 because I feel this is a young mans game and although I love Newman play it will take some major mula to sign him to an extension, at least 50 million and I just can't see us giving a 31yr old player that kind of money.

Thoughts?

Mine would be the hidden option #4:

Draft 1 corner 1st day, another corner 2nd day, sign a FA like Florence, and then extend Newman next year.

They are going to re-sign Newman, it probably happens during the season.

It's a little early to talk about newman, because we dont know the status of the league. If they cancel the cap then lets sign him and any other star we can get that fits the mold of our team. I have a feeling if there isnt a cap he retires a cowboy.
If there isnt a cap, he has definately played his seasons like a man wanting to get his payday, which he deserves. Whether or not we pay it will be seen.

I would go with option 1 and make sure either one or both can return punts and kickoffs.

This is a draft deep in CBs unlike others and CBs are at a premium as they are being tagged with franchise label left and right.
I would pick 2 CBs with our first 4 picks and resign Newman next yr. So far he has been very durable and dependable and hasn't loss any of his speed so a 3-5 yr contract is reasonable.

You also can't have enough good CBs as we found out. Henry is a little less durable and older as well so we need backup plans for him as well. Henry is one player I love to see as a FS. I think he will light it up at that position.

We're going to draft 1, maybe 2 this year, and we're going to resign Newman. He'll get a new 5 year deal sometime during the season, along with Owens probably getting a new 3 year deal during the season as well.

How much do you guys think it will cost to keep Neman?

Neman, I dont think we will keep. Newman will be signed to a 5 year 30 mill deal (give or take 5 mill). Give him 10-12 of that upfront.

How corners are getting paid these days that would be a home town bargain if we pull that off. I say the price will be 50 million for 5 yrs with alot of the money backloaded but that still high for a 31yr old guy.

Draft a corner first, then a safety, then seek a corner in FA who can step in immediately and groom the drafted CB to take Newman's place in a couple of years.

Newman, I think, will remain with us. Jerra won't sell the Cowboys' future for him and TNew will know that.
they will come to an agreement to keep him here until he retires.
But, for the moment, we do need to draft a corner with the first pick. And then a blue-chip safety like I said earlier.

TNewman is great, but he can't do it alone in this day of wide-open offensive gameplans.

I don't think Dallas should or will draft 2 CB in day 1 of the draft. We may take another CB in day 2 but I can't see the Cowboys going CB twice in day 1

Multiply that by 2.5 and you are more on target. 30 million over 5 years, with 12 upfront and a dollar gets you coffee at Starbucks. It won't buy you an All Pro corner (assuming Newman is that good)

Why is it whenever someone wants to argue against signing someone because of age they feel a need to accentuate and or exaggerate.
When discussing player X, its always about how old he will be, never how old he is. And often the player magically ages an extra year.

Newman was born 9/4/1978. As we speak he is 29 years old.
He will turn 30 at the start of next season!

If we tore up the current deal and signed him to a brand new 6 year deal, he'd be 35 at the start of the 6th year. Considering the financial security we'd be offering a year early and the huge increase in 2008 pay, I think we could expect some consessions from Newman.

Here's what the deal might look like. 6 Years 48 mil 18 mil SB
Cap #'s 2008 4mil, 09 6mil, 10 8mil, 11 10mil, 12 10mil, 13 10mil.

Here's why we should sign him.

1) He is as good as anyone at his position.
2) He is a known quantity to us. Dallas knows for sure what they are getting.
3) He was a 25 yr old rookie. That makes him a relatively young 29. Witten is a great example. He was a 20yr old rookie in 2003. When he's 29 he will have 10 years in the league. He'll be an OLD 29!
4) We are a SB contender now! This is when you overspend a little. Steal a little from 2010 and 2011 to give yourself every chance in 08 09.
5) CB's have longevity on thier side. They're right up thier with OT's. Good ones often play at a real high level into thier mid 30's.

You're assuming, with the price of CBs in todays market that he'd be willing to sign for 48 over 6 when guys like Nate Clements and such are getting 80 million or more?

I'd love it if Newman was willing to be that generous but I don't see that happening. At any rate I'd STILL resign him. Like you said he'll be 35-36 years old by the end of a 5-6 year deal and if you structure it right, and he's seriously declined by the last year or two of the deal, you dump him and move on.

i draft a cb in the 1st rnd, another by the 3rd. i sign newman this year to a 5 yr 32.50 mil deal. and yes that will get it done if it's all real money. most of these contracts people refer to are not all real money. clements is never gonna get all the money he signed for. you cut a deal with newman that is all real money and he will take that amount which is probably fairly close to the real money most of these guys are actually gonna get. thats why makig the ellis deal last year was important, it shows players that they don't have to worry when they sign a deal here they will get their money and we don't have to stcik in all that fluff
